flirting with mechanics

Thanks derian - i love that ice cream story - it's fabulous.

I should point out i'm not the sexy girly type -- i'm overweight and both times i've been i've been wearing work clothes and day-old makeup.
I count flrting in this instance as being friendly, chatty and smiley - in the same way i relate to school admin staff, it's not fake - but i make an effort to be smiley and nice so people feel inclined to help you out with a favour...

it's not eye contact and innuendo firting. just to clear that up. :o

That's the whole point - exactly what you've just said. I don't think men or women are drawn to giving favours on the basis of a fleeting physical sexual attractiveness, manipulated by way of 'come hither' flirting. There will always be a few exceptions to prove the rule - but I reckon the majority of folks just react well to some friendly smiley chattiness, lighten up the day thing. I don't think it's normally about sex and/or power ... more about giving a great person (or sad person) a favour because their behaviour and personality sparks something good inside.

Will you CUT IT OUT with this overweight thing, what complete nonsense

What has that got to do with anything? If women had to be drop dead gorgeous to get sex the human race would die out.

I have been driving for about 20 months, not long after I passed my test I reversed into a bollard and bent my bumper away from my back wheel trim thingy, the 1st garage I went too quoted £50, I really had no idea but I have a mate that works at Halfords so was going to ask his advice before agreeing to anything. On the way to his work I found another garage, I pulled up and this lovely man asked me whats the problem, he tells me to pull in a bit more...and by the time I get out the car he had fixed it . I asked him how much ? reply was 'I ain't done nothing...so nothing'. so easily could have paid £50. Later that day bought 2 £1 scratchcards and won £25 ! Now I go to a local garage to me (as does everyone I meet ..!) and all the folk there are cool. I had to get my car towed there the other week as Mia (my car) would not start..turns out she started ok but needed anti freeze and oil price was £30. The next week I call the garage again and get free advice on the phone, I carry out the advice and car is now better than ever. The man that owns the garage has also been known to let you pay off your bill in installments and knock off the vat...he also has loads of parts of VW Beetles in his yard which are nice to look at.

my local garage are really helpful to me too, recently came out when my back wheel was sticking and i couldn't get it off the drive, fixed it and didn't charge me a penny because i'm a 'good customer' (trans: drives beat up old heap that needs something doing to it every couple of months). they also always let me borrow one of their cars if they need to keep mine in - usually this ancient gold bmw that makes me feel like a right pimp :D

i have no idea whether they're extra nice to me because i'm female, or whether it's just good customer service (i wouldn't go anywhere else now and have recommended them to others) but i have to admit to flirting a bit and slightly overplaying the clueless girly card ;)

but that's it - it is good customer service.

I also wouldn't go anywhere else now either - evn for stuff like services, which i know i'll pay full whack on. So why do so many garages see a female customer and try to rip them off - because that's happened to me a lot.

Because they think you're so ignorant that you won't know you're being ripped off.

I did a course in car maintenance years ago - I don't do any work myself anymore (I have changed a few alternators, wheels and fan belts in my time  ) but it's always stood me in good stead when dealing with mechanics.

Thats sounds like a garage I'm looking for :) would you mind letting me know where it is?

So what happens if flirted with mechanic starts to expect a little bit more than the sight of a pretty face and puts feelers out for a date/drink etc. I mean he is a bloke afterall and us blokes only want one thing (its well documented). If he is turned down and realises he's just been flirted with to get a job done then what do you think the next bill will look like?
