Fleas!

They also don't like tea tree, well people put it on dogs as preventative anyway.

Sprinkle salt on the carpet leave it overnight then hoover and empty the bag once you've done as much as you're going to. If you had an old flea collar you can cut it up and put it in the hoover bag but you don't wanna leave a hoover bag full of fleas (and no collar to kill 'em) in your house. Or if you're posh and have a Dyson they'll all be waving at you through the bagless window. :D

Are there any rooms in your house without carpet you can sleep for tonight?

Defleaing is a bloody expensive operation if your house gets infested, and yes some people get bitten and some never know there's fleas in the house!

if you hoover dont forget to empty the bag or the little fuckers just hop out once its turned off !
Arse. Thanks - I hadn't thought of that :(

No Dyson, so I can't thumb my nose at them! The bedroom, bathroom and kitchen don't have carpet, but I've had fleas on me in all three of them.

Or SE1, I work there and can take it to the office.
That's really kind, thank you :)

I'm in East sussex tonight, unfortunately. By the time I get back to town and then down here again, I'll be able to buy some stuff.

Having said that, no Dyson, but no bag either. it should be ok. Idiot woman (me).

When we lived in a first floor flat in Walthamstow in the late 80's a bloke downstairs had a dog that was infested with fleas. We shared the same front door so inevitably our flat got the fleas as well. I used to watch the little fuckers hopping around and I had some horrendous bites. We eventually persuaded the bloke to sort the dog out but it took us ages to rid the place of fleas. Fucking horrible it was.

Can i just add.... make sure you know where the cat's going as if its going round someone elses house you may find that you just keep reinfecting each other. And wear a gas mask when you use that spray stuff, it gives me breathing problems.

On the plus side it will help you to remember to keep the cat protected.

also, put a load of saucers of milk with honey round the edges and corners, then the ones that jump in can't get out ;)

a vet should sell you a single pipette of spot-on Frontline for 3 or 4 quid. Screw this natural remedy pish, nuke the little bastards with all the chemicals you can afford :D
This, without a shadow of a doubt!

My ex bought fleas home from his mate's infested place, took me ages to get rid of them, until I discovered the spray stuff from the vet..
My receipe for success : frontline for the cats, and some stuff called 'indorex spray' from the vet. It was ages ago, I don't know if they still sell it and I can't remember how much it cost (I seem to remember it wasn't cheap) but its VERY effective!

I warn you though, that indorex is vicious stuff. Wash everything that's washable - furniture covers, bed clothes, YOUR clothes! Hoover EVERYTHING -furniture, bed, skirting boards, floorboard cracks, and anything else you can think of. Then, spray indorex everywhere - furniture, pet bedding, skirting boards, tiles, all the cracks & crevices you can find and (if you're me) vacate the house for a bit (that includes pets). It says on the can to ventilate the room after use and I do, but not straightaway if I can help it. The only thing is says on the can NOT to use it on is your own bed, and directly onto your pet.

It sounds like overkill, and perhaps it is but I've had flea infestation twice, and each time I've only had to do the above once, with a bit of extra spraying of indorex a few days later and it's been sorted.

Diatomaceous earth is a type of fossilized algae that resembles chalk dust. The fine, sharp-edged particles attach themselves to and penetrate the waxy coating on a flea's shell-like exoskeleton, causing the little bloodsucker to dehydrate and die.

i got that from this link

I asked for advice when we were getting bitten a few months ago - I haven't done it yet (guilty of not acting on urban advice:facepalm:) and the fleas have tailed off a bit

still intend to get some - did try half heartedly in a few shops - think it best to get online (when you can afford it)

I feel for you! When my cat had kittens last year the house was suddenly flea ridden...I could see them crawling over the skin of the new born kittens :(...and then I had to go abroad ( good move)....and left my Mum to feed the cats...she was bitten to absolute buggery, and each bite came out like a tiny black bruise....they dont touch me at all....so I went to the vets and was offered Front Line at an exorbitant price, I think it's a disgrace that the robbing git can expect people to cough up £30 plus for the stuff....so I found it online for just £16 for a six pack...and we've been flea free since....also got a tin of Acclaim for the soft furnishings.....

here's the cheap place for front line...http://www.vetuk.co.uk/

Much thank yous, everyone :)

I'm busy eating garlic

Will buy some nukes at the end of the week :cool:

Decided I daren't camp as the cat will have been on a dirty protest in the garden. But I should have just about enough repellant left to spray a little where I sleep. The seem to avoid my head and upper body mostly (or I don't react there), so it should be ok.

It sounds easier to get rid of than bed bugs - we've just been fumigated for the third time, the whole house! It's horrible being bitten as you sleep though, it really fucks up your energy levels the next day. I've been sleeping on my sofa for a month and I'm just back in my room. Still sleeping on cushions though, I had to sling out my lovely futon :(
Frontline is the business for getting rid of them on animals, never had to get rid of fleas in a room though. I think putting covers and fabrics in the dryer on hot should kill most bugs, I just did that with all the things that wouldn't survive the washing machine.
Hope you can get rid of them soon.
