I'd say that Flat Earth News is a different type of book to Manufacturing Consent.
FEN is written by a former journalist laying out what he sees as wrong with the media in which he worked, naming names, giving specific examples and making a clear case of the practical systemic problems that he sees as devaluing the media. I like to think that I have a good level of cynicism about the media and I was still taken aback at some of the stuff he mentions, with things like the pro-Israeli propaganda machine and racism at the Daily Mail explained in detail, with examples.
MC has a more academic perspective on the structure of the mass media and how this affects the output.
They're both good books, and if you read both you should get a well rounded perspective on how the media works, with many of the things going (or gone) wrong being down to economic and structural deficiences rather than consipracies or individual personalities such as Murdoch.
Yes it is well worth reading. I have the hardback version. It is about the current state of the media relating to the particular reasons why things have changed in the way journalists work. It is topical and revealing.
