Flash Gordon re-make -- C+NT!

Sam Jones popped up in a flop TV series called "The Highwayman", I think. Probably a condo salesman in Florida these days.

is that correct, Dub?
Actually, it's "Flash...,flash I love you, but we only have 14 hours to save the earth!!"

I, like Dub, have the script burned into the back of my brain

I've always thougt Ming the Merciless would be a good name for a cat.
I sometimes call crap weather/food/whatever "merciless" instead of "minging"...

sam jones was an american football or baseball player as i recall... and, strange though it seems now, flash gordon was a flop when it came out, so he probably couldn't get any more film work.

I believe his career was scuppered by the fact he was so bad at acting they re-recorded all his lines with a macho sounding voice over artist (much to his irritation). Topol was far better in this than that fiddler on the roof crap. Isnt ming sampled on the Orbs 'Adventures beyond the ultra world'. And its got Peter Duncan in it 'Spare me the madness'. It is the ultimate wet bank hoilday w/e film, is on in a few weeks?.

come now, wooden acting is hardly a bar to success... what did his voice actually sound like? a high pitched squeak would probably do him in in the end...

Rent LA takedown (cheap TV movie dry-run of Heat) for about 3 lines from a rather gone-to-seed Sam J Jones. He's fine.
Or The Highwayman (short-lived late-80s very silly truck version of Knight Rider).

Nope - your "bring-it-on" approach to re-makes and multi-versions. :p
I'll admit your name doesn't discourage my hypothesis -- though your English does. <shrugs like Ted Theodore Logan>

There's no such thing as a perfect untouchable never do again film. Films are of their time. Sometimes people find they can have another go at an idea, and find something that attracts a contemporary audience. I'm looking forward to the remake of the Manchurian Candidate - even though I love and revere the original. (Angela Lansbury rocks).

And another of the reasons I say 'bring it on', is that a remake can point us towards the original even, or especially when, the remake is bollocks.

But it's worrying that American films are so much arse at the moment. These endless franchises amount to retreads, with not even the dignity or ambition of a straight remake, and the great rash of original filmmaking that was around in the seventies when I started going to the pictures has dried up. It's not all bad, but could be so much better.

That's all dealt with in the Raging Bulls book, which sets out the origins of the problem.

The vulcan attack, with Flash Gordon on a light cycle (I think), ably supported by some monumental fret-work from Queen...my favourite bit of the film :D

I wonder what Stephen Sommers would do with it? Hmm... impressive poster? Check. Functional, goodish looking cast? Check. Tie-in to some sort of amusement park ride? Check. Absurdly large visual fx budget? Check. Decent script? Script, anyone? Oh, well...(Production goes ahead anyway :( )

vogonity, that's a rocket cycle. As in:

Flash Gordon: Flash Gordon to Vultan. Do you read me? Mayday! Mayday!
Prince Vultan: This is Vultan, I read you. Where are you?
Flash Gordon: Flying blind on a rocket cycle.
Vultan: Flying blind on a rocket cycle!?

Light cycles were from Tron, another awesome movie from the same time (and proof positive that firewalls are Evil and Communist :) ).
