Five Albums, Five Genres

alt-country - Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot

Just investigating more Sparklehorse off the back of the DNOTS.

Dabbled briefly but never given a fair lick.

You would recommend the above over Good Morning Spider and the most recent one?

i love how much you love this album, if that makes sense. They truly were mindblowingly good.

Yeah, I only wish I'd got to see them live.

I think it's one of rock music's harshest tragedies that their bass player died and they just produced the two albums, while some shocking bands have carried on for years and years :mad;

I don't mind the Sophia stuff, but it's a bit too melancholy IYSWIM, what was amazing about the God Machine was the darkness and light, soft and loud, the colossal range and scope of the music in a way that very few bands have come near. :)

I remember listening to that album on the bus as a teenager and it was like you were suddenly being transported down the Nile, instead of on the 253 on a wet grey monday morning.

Sparklehorse have been in my top 3-4 favourite bands ever for a decade or so now. I can't recommend them enough, but they never topped the debut (Vivadixie...). It's real headphone music too, an incredible attention to detail in the sound, lots of little quirks, and an immense sadness in the lyrics.

Oh right - my recommendations:

Folk/Alt country - Bonnie Prince Billy - "I See a Darkness
Indie rock/pop - Sunset Rubdown - "Random Spirit Lover"
Ambient/Electronica - Boards of Canada - "Geogaddi"
Afrobeat - Fela Kuti - "Expensive Shit/He Miss Road"
Joanna Newsome - Joanna Newsome "Ys"

Good - I tend to listen like this these days; I have never regretted the money spent on my portable system and earbuds.

they were just so intense (and not in a gothy way) - bludgeoning at times, but with real subtlelty as well. Saw them at Reading when they fucked the PA. :)

:D I'll upload them to torrents this evening regardless. I have a suspicion that they are 256 k plus though as I have uploaded them to sites which require that.

Bubblegum (South African Dance Pop) - Brenda Fassie - Myekeleni
Soukous - Koffi Olomide - Affaires d'Etat
Rap - Daara J - Boomerang
Punk - Sahara Hotnights - Jennie Bomb
Reggae - Burning Spear - Man In The Hills

Karine Polwart - Terminal Star (folk)
An Ending - Brian Eno (ambient)
Love of my Life - Queen (ballad)
Song To The Siren - This Mortal Coil (Indie)
The Big Noise from Winnetka - Bob Crosby and his Orchestra (jazz)

1) You are a star
2) What is What?

I am always happy to find new sources of media...

:)

It's a really good torrent site like Oink, except that they have loads of FLAC freeleech files, meaning that yer honest-to-god "I want to get a good ratio and I seed 24/7 but never seem to get any results on most ratio-obsessive sites" like me can download those and ensure a good ratio is maintained.

I'm up to 0.79 now, when I get an invite I'll dish one out...

First five recommended albums from different genres off my shelves....

Prog - Pure Reason Revolution: Cautionary Tales For The Brave
Indie - Bright Eyes / Neva Dinova: One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels
"Dance" - Basement Jaxx: Rooty
Hardcore - Refused: The State Of Punk To Come
Rock - Deftones: Back To School EP

By no means the best by all damn good in their own ways.

A random 5 from the back of my brain, not the best, but either what I listened to last or just stuff I likes.

Folk: Entertainment for the Braindead - Hypersomnia
Hip Hop - Tab - Poet in the Darkness
Trip Hop - Damscray - Horseboy
Electro Pop - Mr Raccoon - Katy
&
World/Kezmer - Faren Khan - Faren Khan

All Creative Commons too, so free downloads all round.
