Fish Pie Mania

How about one third haddock and two thirds plaice or one of the "new" white fish that we are supposed to be eating as an alternative to cod...

What are the white-fish alternatives?

Alaskan pollack, certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), will be soon be available wet or breaded. Sainsbury's and Asda sell skinless, boneless, MSC-certified hoki fillet.

Youngs Bluecrest also offers MSC-certified hoki fillet, breaded pollack for children (Fishysaurus and Flipper Dippers) and Birds Eye does hoki fish fingers. MSC-certified ready-to-cook South African hake is available at Sainsbury's. Choose also from the various white-fleshed, delicious flat fish from British waters. Good species include megrim sole, dover sole and dab.

I'd add a few mussels in preference to prawns.

Rumbled !!! :D

ps. rumour has it that Anna Key was seen listening to "System of A Down" on a cd player the other day !!! I think "pop" music soon beckons for the fella ;)

More likely deconstructing the political content of the lyrics....although he probably couldn't understand the lyrics...it happens as the years roll by, not including John Peel of course....

Well, it wasn't threatening, but I did make him jump....I sneaked up behind him...saw he was on urban logged in as sturmunddrang, slapped the capers down on the desk....then said "Sorry, I forgot, you don't like capers do you?" took them back, wagged my finger at him as he laughed nervously, and then I buggered off for a cup of coffee...

i've just fallen off my chair laughing.

grrrrrrrrrrr

Do you not want that jar of capers? I'm quite partial to them myself...
Me too, especially in one of them luvverly Pizza Express Venezianas. capers, olives and sultanas -- one of those counter-intuitive food synergies that postmodern chefs try so hard to create.

Unfortunately he seems to be having trouble seeing the funny side of this.

They don't like it up 'em! :D

LOL :D

see I can't say I'm surprised he's having trouble ;) :D

still funny as fuck though :D

Apparently he says I was really angry when went I went into the library...no, I would say triumphant because my hunches were correct in that he's a bare-faced liar and every time we've sussed him it's because he's not a quarter as clever as he imagines he is. If I had been angry (on the very rare occasions I get angry I go stratospherically postal) he'd be scared to leave his flat.

smoked haddock and cod are the best. plenty of spinach, with some scallops and prawns

Brilliant thread and top award to Moderator who goes just that bit further in order to maintain the boards must got to Mrs Magpie. :D

fancy using the cover of genteel suburban to sneak back into urban though.

Sorry Anna but this is had me laughing :D .I heard about this on the Brixton grapevine on Saturday.Ever thought of entering the Marathon Mrs Magpie? Its quite a trek from your place to the library. :)

Genius, and worthily linked on the funniest quotes thread. :D

A magic magpie...

As for a cod alternative, wtf's wrong with coley people? I know grey flesh ain't as appealing as white, but there's nowt wrong with the taste. Cheap as Lesley n'all.

The Anna Key Caper

Well, when he went all "Who? Me? I don't know what you mean." when sussed out yet a-bloody-gain, I thought, sod it, I'll catch him in the act. I'm fed up of him thinking we're as thick as pig-shit when what he thinks is subtle is actually about as subtle as a herd of morris-dancing pachyderms. His constant obsessive re-registering is a pain and actually now means that people who register from Brixton Library and local internet caffs are unlikely to get access to the boards. I thought instead of the usual heart-sink of his endless re-registering/ban cycle, I'd have a laugh at his expense. Which I did.....

absolute comedy gold.

mrs magpie, you are a fucking star.

Seconded.

I'm just glad women weren't allowed in the police force when Mrs M was a wee slip of a girl. Can you imagine "Magpie of the Yard"?

I'm going to have nightmares about that now, you bastard.

That's got to be the best bit of moderating ever. Is there some sort of award we can nominate Mrs M for?

i love this thread too - it should be archived. truly surreal the way that it's become completely derailed into discussing the annakey farrago, yet you still every few posts get some fool who clearly hasn't bothered to read the whole thing before posting popping up and saying things like "smoked haddock and cod, spinach, scallops and prawns" :D :D  :D

I think the top should be crunchy but I say no to cheese, myself....I like peas inside with the fish and creamy sauce though.

I've reported that post Mrs Magpie...
A decent fish pie should contain more than one type of fish, creamed potatoes, peas, brocolli and cheese  :(

This thread is hilarious, oh to have been a fly on the wall :D

Coley I find more flavourful than cod anyway, I've always used it in preference! As you say it's cheap, probably because the brownish colour of the flesh puts some people off - all the more for us, fools! :D

I like a layer of spinach at the bottom of mine.

Oh and top work Mrs M although I take exception to the following -

being of advancing years myself I understand the lyrics of modern popular tunes perfectly well. With the possible exception of those "tunes" that feature young men who shout rather than sing about how inconvenient live is for them.

a thick skinned animal (eg elephant)

are you on the right thread?

Shouldn't this thread be in the archive anyway, I thought it deserved to be kept for future generations.

Fish pie: always a cream sauce, two types of white fish (pref cod and haddock) and some salmon (smoked adds an interesting dimension), topped with either flaky pastry or mashed potato and cheese.

Never use finnan haddock. Properly this is young haddock, skin on, and fin on (hence the name).

Mrs M, ;) = super cool lady!
