first class train travel - when is it worth it?

that'll start in plymouth then, cause the earliest train out of cornwall wouldn't get into plymouth until nearly 7. i live next to the line and use the trains a lot, so i've got most of the weekday timetable memorised

I used to live next to the main line into Manchester and similarly got very familiar with the timetable. I used to use the increased frequency of the early morning trains as an alarm clock. :)

I used to use Grand Central a lot actually, they were really good in standard as well, but the last time I got them, even first class was shit - I did get a partial refund though.
GC has a first class coach on the older train on the east coast route that is declassified. So first class leg room for standard prices. Why pay a premium for filter coffee on tap?

I've no idea what the old one was like because I wasn't travelling FC then. The new one is...well new. With comfy seats, newspapers and magazines, a TV, WiFi, snacks and good quality hot drinks machines.

Doesn't sound like much has changed then.

I can sleep through most of them, even though they are going past less than 15 foot from my house, cause they are slowed right doen for th station approach. and I sleep through the almost constant maintenance work. the only thing that woke me up was a steam train going past. and i wasn't unhappy about that

For me it was the intercity trains picking up speed heading south which were the alarm clock. First service of the day passed around 05:10. :)

FGW have cancelled the travelling chef on the Exeter - Paddington first train of the day - I've caught it a few times whilst I was working for my old firm and looked forward to Fried egg on toast x 2 to start the day - that's now gone which is a great shame as it just about tipped a shit day working in London into slightly less shit day

Exeter to London is more civilised starting time.... a few years back I seemed to be able to get advanced first class tickets for the 19.05 to Paddington at a price which allowed me to pay for hotel in London and still be cheaper than the walk on standard fare. Bigger comfy seats, free drinks and snacks and less disruption from folk walking through as it's the end two carriages... haven't seen those fares recently.

I wish the Pullman service was NOT named after the unpleasant bloke who invented it:

Many years ago, depending on the fare and route, you could sometimes upgrade to 1st on the train for a fiver. I'm talking 18-20 years ago. I'm sure that was long abolished.

It's worth it when Plod are keen to get hundreds of away fans out of town and herd you all onto the next train home and you find yourselves in first class perched on some suit's table clutching a can of Natch

I've done it once, when Virgin (I think) were running cross country services and did that 'Anywhere for £1' offer as part of a website launch I think. They also did 'anywhere first class for £10' as part of the same deal. They'd release a couple of hundred tickets each morning at something like 6am, first come first served, bit of an online scrum, after failing for a couple of days to grab one we clicked that there'd probably be less of a rush for the first class, and got a couple of seats for Leeds-Edinburgh for a tenner each.

Sounds like a twat. I particularly like this bit:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Pullman#Death_and_Burial

"Fearing that some of his former employees or other labor supporters might try to dig up his body, his family arranged for his remains to be placed in a lead-lined mahogany coffin, which was then sealed inside a block of concrete. At the cemetery, a large pit had been dug at the family plot. At its base and walls were 18 inches of reinforced concrete. The coffin was lowered, and covered with asphalt and tarpaper. More concrete was poured on top, followed by a layer of steel rails bolted together at right angles, and another layer of concrete. The entire burial process took two days."

It's like why they had to burn Thatcher, because they know any grave for her would have become a public urinal.

I've taken to getting first class when travelling on rammed Friday evening train. If I get an advance single ticket from Brockenhurst to Waterloo it's just a tenner - works out cheaper than a regular ticket from Southampton (where I actually board the train, even though it's a shorter journey). I had no idea about free food/drink though, never been offered it.

Savile had something similar

Similar to Savile's burial arrangements.

I think they took Savile's headstone away. He's buried at an angle facing the sea. They should build a wall to spoil his view.

When I was working in that there London a couple of years ago they used to bring me up and down in first class on the Virgin Pendolino or whatever it's called.
Free breaky of poached eggs and smoked salmon in the morning and snacks and wine on the way back.

I never told my dad. He'd of called me a cunt :D

I'm more than happy to fill in for him if you like?

I can only recall travelling first class once and it it was one of those inexplicable situations where it worked out cheaper than standard. I don't recall offers of free booze though. Maybe they kept it quiet.

Is there a fair useage policy? :D

Hull trains

I disagree: the food on Hull Trains is pretty poor, although the first class carriage is comfortable.

First class on East Coast is good, although expensive unless you land a good off-peak discount or have saved up enough reward points for a free ticket. When I was commuting to London I used to burn up my reward points on first-class journeys on the Hull Executive. Leave Hull at 0700, and I'd be sipping (rather good) coffee and reading the complimentary newspaper before we'd passed the Humber Bridge, and by the time we got to Selby I'd be finishing off their very acceptable cooked breakfast. After that it was a matter of relaxing in the big comfy seats and drinking free coffee all the way to London. :D

If I'm going any distance I split tickets. I had to go to Birmingham from Hayle last year. I split Hayle to Plymouth (Going anywhere up country from Cornwall just by splitting at Plymouth you save a fucking fortune), Plymouth to Newton Abbot, Newton Abbot to Bristol, Bristol to Cheltenham, Cheltenham to Birmingham and saved nearly half. Between Bristol and Cheltenham it was cheaper to get First Class which I did and stayed there until Birmingham. Also went to a gig in Plymouth once and got a First Class ticket for £2.30. The MP for Camborne area at the time was also on the train. My mate had cross words with her when she didn't know who his band were despite them being her favorites on her Myspace. First against the wall.
