Great thank you for that, I've registed and have already figured out that its overwatering and bad drainage.

I probably could have got away with planting them directly outdoors this summer. But I think that apart from the caterpillars they enjoy the sunny windowsill.

on a related note about vegetable firsts, we've now got our first actual runner bean which appeared yesterday.

Methinks some of you lot should chop some of them chillis and put them in some olive oil, I made some and it's got a very subtle warmth which kicks in just after you swallow it. I didn't use many chillis, maybe 2 small chillis per 250ml of oil. Use it as soon as it's reached the desired warmth, as it gets stronger with age...

Yay, I'm all chuffed...just watered me plants and I've got a big fat green chilli growing on me plant!! :D :D Woohoo!! I'm usually the kiss of death to all plants, so to keep them all alive is sommat I'm proud about, but to actually GROW stuff too! :D

but I have jam.

I made jam with fruit that I picked.

I have jam!

I also have a tomato plant growing with my chillis. How's that for irony? Obviously escaped the holocaust that one.

My chillis are growing fast now though - maybe I'll get something before the end of the summer :o :D

I don't like jam :p

It doesn't take long from flower to actual real live genuINE chilli pepper so take heart dear heart :)

When do I pick the fucker, that's what I want to know. It looks like an adult chilli to me...

the only key thing is that its stopped growing

check it over a few days and if it has (colour irrelevant) pick it :)

its a bit like deadheading flowers, the quicker you take off the chillis it'll produce more flowers cos it wants to produce the seed to germinate new plants :)

Excellent, thanks aqua :)

Couldn't resist a quick boast...I now have another 5 chillis growing :) I think I'm gonna pick the big one tomorrow, cos it's getting rather large now

How is everyone else's?

must have at least 150 chillies now... and the 1st fell the other day
Do you wait for them to fall then instead of picking them? My big chilli's turning into a reet big bastard

update; after hand picking the caterpillers off my plant almost on a daily basis, I thought I was safe and my pepper plant was looking healthy, even if a little lacy. Two days ago I noticed that my lace leaves were looking more threadbare than usual and spotted a bastard fully grown caterpiller happily munching away. I inspect the plant closely and see one other little hairy bastard, so I take them off and throw them in the vine plant outside.

Today I see three more bastard hairy caterpillers having a good munch! Jesus wept are they ever going to stop appearing............

I have about 5 healthy capsicums growing very slowly, I think they might die now as the leaves are so full of holes that I doubt they are getting the nourishment they need.

Next time I get the chemicals out and spray the plant.....

yeah doesnt really matter though if one looks juicy and ready i yop it off, but they generally drop off naturally when they are ready

In your face naysayers!

The chillis have gone mental in the last 2 weeks! I have 2 flowers and a bunch of knobbly bits - am I going to get chillis this year?!

Please look at my pics - there are a couple of a rogue plant in the pot that's getting big. I think it's a tomato plant as I squished a cherry tom into the pot when I repotted the chillis - except the other seedlings have only just come through which makes me think it's a random.

Is it tomato? I took a close up of its leaves for you to tell me :)

Hoorah!

yep  tis a tomato :D

and the nobbly bits ARE chillis, watch em grow  the chillis grow where the flower once so long as its been pollinated (which will happen if they're outside)

:)

pieye - your next task is to work out what chillis you have :D

when they start to grow, take a picture and I'll tell you what variety they are

actually, can you take a couple of he flowers too? from the underneath so I can see the colours clearly? :)
