Firing people - is it ever right?

In an ideal world, but sometimes the wrong people get hired. A sacking during the probation period is still a sacking.

Luckily I'm not in a firing position in my role, I'd hate it, but I have been involved with firing someone before. It was fucking horrible.

At the minute, I'm probably going to have to fire someone.

I'm fucking angry about this for several reasons - angry at the clown that employed the person (he said he felt sorry for them - wtf), angry at the person being thrown in to a place where they would clearly struggle, angry at not being privy to the appointment in the first place.

My boss and his boss have been discussing how to progress and they don't want to fire her, but want her to be someone elses problem - i.e moved sideways.

In all honesty, I think firing might be the best thing for the person involved. A sideways move would mean more of the same and they'd struggle in that job too.

bad crack all round tbh.

A friend of mine was fired from his job recently, was shite but now, he's happier and whilst it was unsavoury at the time, it has worked out to be right and he's better off out of the mess.

Therefore, with those two examples, it is sometimes right!

I have never been fired. I have been made redundant twice, the second time I volunteered for it. I was not completely sure at the time i was doing the right thing and am still not completely sure. History now.

However I did once hire a person to do a sales liason role, I moved the person from production into sales because I really believed they could do the job and etc .. they often failed to turn up without warning, they took long breaks, they didn't do the work well - in short there were loads of problems and then they turned up with a medical complaint which meant they had to take more time off. They were very well versed in their rights, better versed in fact than I was in the companies rights, as such while I and my colleagues wanted rid of them it was not to be easy. In the end said person was shunted neatly into a job in accounts from which after a period they were eventually fired :-)

Re probation periods, I asked a senior director of my then company if I could employ the next person with a 3 month probation period because that would give me a motivated starter and a better chance to ensure they were good for the role. Their response? why do you need a probation period? you are all on probation all the time :-)

While I have not yet had to fire someone, I have been involved in major redundancies which is almost equally unpleasant I think.
