Firefox browser keeps crashing

FF (used here with XP) keeps refusing to start up.

For the last fortnight it's been 1 in 10 times that I can actually get on the net at all, that's even when the connection is good, and that's rare because of the near derelict phone line (from the outside of the flat to the estate's junction box - BT refuses to replace or fix it).

Can't check webmail - not enough time between getting cut off and can't download email because it times out.

I like Firefox, but recently it's been hanging, freezing, crashing, and all sorts of shenanigans. Including not liking to stream video, like the BBC iPlayer. I don't like Chrome. (It cheekily made itself my default browser, and installed itself on my start up bar without being asked, for one thing). So is it back to IE for me?

What else actually works?

I abandoned Firefox ages ago. Too many updates turned it into clunky bloatware. Google Chrome works nicely.
