Fire on Brixton road

Heh we had to evacuate our flat as a precaution. It looks very nasty. Don't think there's any chance of it spreading to our building but I think there is proceedure they need to follow.

The BBC report seems a little behind events. Right now, Brixton Road is completely cordoned off between the junction with Acre Lane/Coldharbour Lane and the junction with Stockwell Road (by the Police Station).

The tube is shut, and buses are being rerouted around central Brixton. The railway station remains open (as far as I could tell).

Crispy posting (yeah, this is an exception, right? :))
We're ok. The smoke is limited to that flat and there's none coming out on our side. Thank god.

Got woken up by the fire alarm going nuts, and clouds of smoke wafting past the window. Thought it was a bin fire or something so just put pyjamas on, grabbed the backup drive and left. Outside the front door is a fireman with a hose spraying water in next door  and then we all get herded back and further back as the fire went on. It was burning on the ground and 1st floors at 11am, and just now was burning on the top floor - a few flames licking out. Can't imagine there's much left inside. Hopefully there's not much damage to our place. Just smoke, and if the wall got hot then maybe stuff we had on the shelves - photos etc - might not be too fine.

Sparrow hopes that this counts as a big enough inconvenience to get an extension on her coursework.

Agent Sparrow & Crispy...If you have nowhere to sleep (hopefully all will be fine) & need a comfortable bed, gissa ring. Contact number in Mods forum.

Massive hug to agent sparrow and crispy. I was so worried when I went and had a look. So glad you guys are alright...

if there's anything you need give us a shout!

Sparrow here - funny what you realise is important to you when this happens - the thing I'm most worried about getting damaged is my computer with my current assignment on it. If that gets damaged or they don't let me get back into the flat I'm a bit fucked, and I'd be a bit gutted if I lose my travelling photos, but everything else is just material, innit. Trying not to worry about worst case scenarios at the moment.

I thought I had better let people know that as far as we know, nobody lives in the house on fire, it's all storage. So hopefully no one will be physically hurt. Was mesmerising watching the firemen - they're so brave.

Thank you everyone for kind words and offers of places to stay - we're being well looked after by tastebud at the moment. Lots of sweet tea! And Crispy now has alternative clothes to his PJs (he was looking very Arthur Dentish! :D)

They are here with me, it's true. I thought they were TV inspectors so didn't let them in for a while. But luckily they weren't. Just Arthur Dent and his little friend.
Pretty hysterical, but a little worrying too.

Anyway, pizza time.

Sweet tea rocks. As do firemen, very brave indeed, I am such a wuss I baulk at cycling let alone burning buildings :o

Hope your stuff is ok. If you need clothes or anything I'm sure urban could whip you up a worzel gummidge style outfit to tide you over ;)
How lucky that the flat is unoccupied!

CRISPY:
The fire seems to be burning out now. Much less smoke, and the firefighters are more relaxed. It'll be a while before the tube's open again though, I reckon.

I have very fetching dark paisley pj trousers, and a thick towelled dressing gown. The pyjamas maketh the man.

A couple of photos from an hour ago. Things look much better now.

Scary photos. Sadly, looks as though there's going to be a fair amount of smoke damage. I'm sure that some of us will come and lend a hand with the clear up.

Crispy, you said you took the backup drive ... was Sparrow's current assignment backed up?

There was a rumour going round that there were loads of cannisters in there which were at risk of exploding!

I have questions about potential heat/smoke damage and the likelihood of us not being allowed back in due to structural integrety of next door, but I'm not sure I want to ask them and risk worrying myself. :(

No, but tbh, as the fire doesn't seem to have spread and the computer was away from the wall of the house on fire and fairly distant from the windows, I'm quite hopeful that will be OK. Just depends when they let us get back in. Thank god this didn't happen next weekend (deadline next Monday).

I salute you sir!

A good, sturdy dressing gown is the mark of a fine and upstanding gentleman.

Not so sure about the PJ's though....

It's a lot to take in at the mo and you can't do anything about it so it's probably not worth asking too many questions.

you're renting aren't you?

I'm also happy to help you clean up dependent on outcome.

I've just heard that from a PCSO outside my flat. From another source I've just heard there's a small chance that they'll extend the evacuation . I'm hoping that's just a rumour though!

*goes to pack bag just in case*

ETA: Just spoken to the PCSO again and he thinks that is unlikely - phew!

That sounds hopeful, fingers crossed x

edit: did you take your phone with you, btw?

I guess you'll be buying yourself a USB key and backing up all your work to that?

^ a seriously Good Idea ^

CRISPY:
We have a Time Machine backup drive, but silly sparrow hadn't used it in a while.
I used it last night :smug:

Crispy and AS: in case you didn't get my text, you're more than welcomw to crash at my place tonighe if you're not allowed back in.
