mine are fairly strong, so they grow to what i'd call medium without any looking after whatsoever. Then one will break, so i'll make sure it's kind of rounded at the end so it doesn't snag on anything, and let it do its own thing again.

Likewise.

I have occasional bouts of looking after mine, but they're few and far between. I experimented once to see how long I could grow them - that was scary ... but before the days of me using a keyboard. Doubt that I could do that again.

Considering it was you, pogofish, I'm impressed it didn't necessitate a trip to A&E and a few pages in the Lancet :D

I've already contributed to the Lancet this year but that was in a professional capacity! :D

I used to bite my nails and then stopped. As a result I forget to cut them so they get really long without me noticing them. I've had to start trimming them of late as I've nicked the baby a few times :o

They're very rarely polished although they might get a special PRoD treat :D

one of my long nails has snapped off, and now I think my manicure tomorrow will be pointless

:(

Bollocks. Could you have a falsie on that one? Or have them all cut short?

(((tanky's nails)))

Depends which hand. My left I keep very short, my right a little longer. They grow. I cut them. That's it.

Guitar playing innit :)

My nails grow pretty quick and are quite strong, but I always have them as short as possible, else I scratch myself when I'm asleep

My nails are always longer than my fingers, often 1cm long(the white) and only go shorter if they break, which they do eventually.
If I let them get too long they do start to slide on the keyboard and I will sometimes give them a bit of a file then.

The nails on the left are shorter just now coz two of them broke the other night so I'll need to do the other hand to match when I have a bath tonight. I'll leave the thumb nails though.

I hate raggedy or dirty nails and somehow they stay cleaner when they are longer.

And I look after my cuticles too :)

usually between short and medium, voted medium as they are like that today but will be biting them short over the weekend - once they start to tap on a keyboard they irritate me and I have to get rid. Usually polished, currently dark red.

My worst habit is picking my cuticles and the skin round my nails, totally a stress thing, they get very sore and bleed -have bought some of the Sally Hanson cuticle cream to keep them soft as if they don't go hard there's not very much to pick, seems to be working so far :)

bollocks indeed! I knew leaving them until I went to get them done was a bad idea!

well, they're going to be fairly short anyway, but the one that came off came off at the skin

I'm sure it'll look ok, but I wanted them to be perfick!

My nails are ridiculously strong and grow naturally into a sort of French manicure colour scheme with bright white tips, so these days I mostly let them grow to a medium length and file as appropriate. Every now and again I'll cut them all back, if I'm too fed up with the constant filing. I rarely ever bother painting them though, since I'm always picking my teeth and the polish just flakes off in my mouth
same as this, except for the teeth picking bit

I use a glass nail file which IMO is a great investment as they work better than emery boards and last forever.

I also use a 4 sided nail buffer as my nails grow with ridges on them and I like them to look smooth and polished. i usually top this off with a clear top coat so my nails look natural but well groomed.

I have long nails, never bitten them and it's not often they break, they're usually painted red or purple. As louloubelle mentions the glass nail file is fab, I got one given as a present a few years ago and never looked back. I also use a buffer, the polish goes on a treat after 10mins with one of them.

I keep meaning to go get a french pedicure , very decadent.

I voted short, but really I just let them do what they're gonna do, and cut them down when they break or get in the way. I have to cut the ones on the left hand right down if I'm playing the mandolin much. I hate the look of long fingernails or fake ones.

MY fingernails tend to finish at about the end of my finger. I can't be bothered with growing them.

I do like to have red nails but it's well obvious when it chips after 2 days (like now). Maybe that's another thread. Nail varnish longevity.

See now I realise my poll is flawed, as I consider stig's nails to be 'long' and she thinks they are 'medium'. :(

<stabs self with glass nail file> ;)

Very bitten............

have given up trying to give up...iykwim, have done it all my life and although i know it looks horrible i'm a very tense person and it's a stress reliever !

In fact i don't take care of my hands full stop !

(cries about nasty hands)

:o

i play the piano since youth, so i've never grown my nails long. they're always cut short.
i like them that way. it's much more hygienic imo.

Mine never break but they grow in a weird shape so they look terrible long. I clipper them to level with the ends of my fingers, it's the only way they look ordinary. It was a revelation when I realised that clipping them was so quick and easy compared with filing!

When I am organised I put see-thru/pinkish or deep scab red/brown on them.

And I can't even bite them since having a brace straightened my teefs out - they don't fit into the right shape anymore :(

Surely if you wash your hands when you should, long nails are no different to short nails?
