Finding your way around the Barbican

I take Ariadne with me when I go there.

Wonderful place, seemingly out of date when it was built, but far more appreciated now. Go and look at the concrete close up. It's beautiful. And look at the saw-shaped balconies on the flats. Stunningly beautiful.

I still intend to do my 'Barbican Highwalk Safari' (probably plus bits of the City)London walk at some point, but I can't guarantee free weekends until next year due to moving house, but I can use my lunch hour in the meantime to try and find my way around it a bit better.

I think it might make a good short-ish winter walk, so when I have some more time I'll think about a date. :)

i always thought getting lost was part of the point of the barbican. MC and i went to the museum of london today and i was going to take her on a ramble through it but we were knackered and had stuff to do in a few hours.
Yes we should do that soon :) Sounds interesting, being lost is good for me every now & then.

In MY office :p

I had a girlfriend once who was doing a PhD. I tried to persuade her to change her surname to Pussycat on the grounds that they would have to put a plaque on her office door saying Doctor Pussycat.

I've just remembered a great view...on the roof of International House in Brixton...don't know how you'd get access though. I only did because I was training people (disability awareness) and that was the venue.

OOPSY! :D
back on-topic. I used to work top of aldersgate st so i know this patch of land pretty well, it can be navigated but you'll need a lot of time to spend on trial and error.,.
on the other hand, there's a good pub flogging belgian beer opposite-ish barbican tube, so that'd start cloo's walk nicely!

the barbican is a fucking hellhole. stupidly decided to see L'enfant (good film) at its cinema on friday and it's the most useless venue in britain. ages to find the barbican in the first place from the station. when got there signs for cinema led to basement. then find out it's the wrong cinema and the right one is at the top. only way of getting there is one lift which the whole building using. when eventually get in it the buttons give you no idea of what is on what floor - que lots of jumping in and out of lift to see if on the right floor or not. then when on the right floor a right job finding the screen. feezing cold cinema, then when we come out there is nowhere to drink in the barbican apart from a desolate palce with a few stand up tables. c*nts.

On the subject of the amenities - anyone else been to the RSC theatre there? It HAS to be the most uncomfortable theatre EVER.

i never bothered to look around and try and find my own way around when i was inside the B - i had my own personal guides.

knowing general managers helps.

I love the Barbican and think it's an amazing building, but then 60's and 70's architecture and design is a passion of mine. I often go there just to walk around the place and I would love to live there if I could afford it. Never found it that difficult to find my way around there, especially as it has yellow lines on the floor that take you to the centre. The tropical indoor garden is like something out of the sci-fi film Silent Running.

I've often though that the Barbican would make an excellent level for a video game. I imagine myself sprinting around the corridors bridges and walkways obliterating aliens with my laser gun.

It is amazing not just because of the architecture but also because of the sheer scale of it. I had a wander through again tonight, just because. I got lost of course, but that's half the fun.

Strolling around the Barbican on a summers day can be wonderful, it's quiet and relaxing and around the ponds in the middle it does seem like utopia.

On a windy day when it's pissing around and you can't find the right way out it's hell.

I've never got too lost there mind, but I think the general complexity of its design does make signposting difficult and the lines are just too logical and not intuative enough.

They might be in the library. Since joining I've been there about thirty times and I still get lost almost every time.

The gents bog in the waterside cafe is amazing. Not only is it the hand-tooled concrete mentioned above, but BOTH walls curl around you as head inwards to to the urinals.

Quite hard to find, though :D
