Finding out the real speed of your broadband connection

This is about average for my Orange 8Mb connection

Well average when I can actually get a connection :mad:

I pay for 10mb so that's fine.

However, Virgin are teh evils at the moment throttling at 2 separate times now, instead of the usual one. Lately I'm finding that even if I haven't been torrenting my service grinds to a halt in between those times (10-4 I think, then again in the evening).

I pay for 24mb and i get this

which isn't great, i guess

Hmmm. I was thinking of switching to Be Unlimited, but (-like most ISPs, tbf) it doesn't look quite as fast as their advertising gumpf promises... :hmm:

Still, yours is still a whole lot faster than what I've currently got. :o

It's pretty cheap too - 18quid a month, totally uncapped (or at least i've yet to bump up against any fair use issue, and I really cane it)

Yeah, it looks okay. I currently pay the same price with another ISP for only 2mb (-and of course, in reality, that's only 'up to' 2mb...)

I've been very slack about changing ISPs, etc, but even the 'actual' speed you're getting is about five times faster that what I've got now, but for the same price.

I will... rectify this situation at ...er... some point... soon. :o

There are ways to roughly tell how much your going to get from Be* using the graph

http://www.beforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6490

and delving about in your current routers settings to see if you can find your existing DSL1 line attenuation. Below about 45db is where it starts to be worth getting for speed.

That's not its greatest selling point though, its the unlimited model they have. This induces a philosophy that they will invest to ensure bandwidth, perhaps even putting up the price, though they did drop it 6 quid last time they changed it.

Once you get above about 8Mbs your not going to be able to tell the difference between that and someone at the max of 24Mbs (which there are a lucky few).

I get 18-19Mb to the Be router in the local exchange.

What blew my mind was that I actually managed to download things at that speed!! I had a service pack coming in at 16-17Mb, a torrent running about 1.5Mb, and I was logged into work surfing the web.

Fuck me, I was well impressed.

What does this mean? I'm not even sure what kind of speeds I should be getting to be honest, I fork out just over £20 to Pipex each month :o

Okay, spoke to Pipex, politely pointed out crapness of service being received and have been upgraded to an 8mbps unlimited download connection for £7.99 per month, first five months free.

Should have spoken to them ages ago, this will save me almost £200 in the first year

Thanks for all the advice on this thread folks. My download speed appears to have improved considerably but my upload speed is around 200kbs - is this typical, or should I be hassling pipex for more? I do a small amount of file sharing via Skype and so on, but don't host massive torrents or anything. I do play online games (eg Eve) when I get time.
