Filtering Out The Snake-Oil Salesmen

chop up 2 teaspoons of fresh ginger root, put it in a cup, -> pour boiling water over, let it brew for 15 minutes: -> = strong tea which, if you drink it while still hot, will cure your cold and loosen up all blocked mucous glands.

Yes, and if you've got a wart, you rub it with a piece of meat and bury it in the garden and hey presto, your wart will drop off

no, my mum told me that in case of warts you should tie a piece of string around it, make a knot on the string (as many knots as there were warts, i think, don't remember exactly how is was),
then you should cut off the string with the knot but let the string around the wart remain, dig a hole in the earth, say three times: "go down in earth, down in earth, like this knot go down in earth" (don't remember exactly what was said but the content was similar)
...then putting the knot into the hole, covering it up with earth, perhaps say some more weird chant rhymes (don't really remember as this was VERY long ago and i was little and she never mentioned it again when i grew older),
and walk away...shortly afterwards, the wart would be gone.

i'd like to add that my mum was a good christian... (but xtianity in the barren, windswept parts of the world she came from was a bit "weird" from local tradition...)
she had to be a closeted believer, though- since my dad was an atheist... :(

Arnica.

I was recently told by a homeompathic type (who is very pleasant personally I should add) that Arnica would be good for the injuries I recently sustained in a motorbike crash. She emphisies that the Arnica she could "prescribe" is stronger than that available in the shops.

When I questioned this, asking how come a cream that has had all the arnica diluted out of it (the one in the shop) was any different from the Arnica she was prescribing (which has had all the Arnica diluted out of it) she got cross and flustered.

I will say though that when my kids mum rubs Arnica on my sons bruises, they fade after only ten days!:)

she didn't really believe in it, though...just mentioned the knots and rhymes as something her gran had told her, we didn't actually go through it or try it out for ourselves...it was just told as an interesting fairytale from the old times...

Ah don't - I've got to tell you this story about my stepdad. He lives in Cyprus and some months ago was convinced he was dying from a brain tumour. He kept getting headaches and shooting pains down his arms. I ask him how he knows this when he hasn't been to a doctor. So he finally goes to a doctor and pays for an MRI scan - nothing shows up at all. So it's not that - he starts thinking it's something to do with sciatica or something and some months pass.
All of a sudden he starts having what can only be described as panic attacks, big dizzy spells, sweats and almost passing out. He's convinced he's having heart attacks or a stroke or at least a precurso to. 'Have you been to the doctor dad?' 'no.' 'fucks sake - get to the fucking doctor and don't phone me again until you have'.
So he goes to the doctor who congratulates him on having a son with a higher IQ than him, and discovers he has 3 large gall stones in his gall bladder. The doctor says - they need to come out as soon as or they could cause all sorts of problems up to cancer.
So I'm thinking that's good, we know what's wrong, he can go and have them out. My dad later: 'I'm on the naturapathy route, I'm going to pass these naturally, god didn't give us gall bladders to have them removed'
'god also gave us red meat, an ability to abuse cheese and red wine and a toxic envirnment' I said. I told him to get a second opinion and a couple of weeks later rings me back.
I'm waiting on good news, keyhold surgery all sorted etc.
'I spoke to the other doctor, he said I should have them out forthwith, or I'll be in trouble'. 'Cool, good' I think.
'But, on the way home I popped into the health nut shop where I told the lady there my problems and she gave me this little piece of paper with a Cypriot Saint on it. She said "tell this saint your problems, put the paper under your pillow and see what happens". So I do this, son, I put the paper under my pillow and guess what?'
me (incredulous): 'What?'
'I'm as right as rain, all pain gone, it's a miracle'.
me: 'okay, but you have been doing the diet, it's probably down to that'
him: 'oh, I've been speaking to the islanders and this saint is very well regarded here - called the miracle worker'.
me: 'alright dad, got to go Maya's crying'

   :p

What can you do? You don't want to go 'get a fucking grip dad', especially if he thinks something has happened. But you kind of know it's going to end in tears...

My dad cut my warts off with a razor!
- ow! - we had to put on a sort of odd alcohol ointment which was sold at the pharmacy in the 80's- it emited a vile smell and almost etched our skin off!
the stuff they made for foot warts were even harsher!

but nothing beats that time i went to the doctor to get a foot wart burned off with one of those gas burners one use at the chemistry lessons...hurt so badly i hit her and swore for half and hour! :D :o

Manuka Honey works wonders for skin things, burns and sore throats. It's really important to go for the 10+ version (or even higher). In NZ it is widely used in hospitals. The NHS is starting to trial it here for healing ulcers etc

Spiralina is great for iron deficiency and general tiredness. It's basically ground up seaweed

Arnica for cuts etc.

And garlic, of course, for general germ fighting.

That's all. Everything else is rubbish :)

My nan said you should rub the juice you get in a dandelion stalk on a wart to get rid of it.
Ah, but my nan said picking dandelions makes you wet the bed. But you can take mullein for that. But mullein can give you catarrh. But you can take garlic for that. But garlic makes your breath smell, so you could take parsley for that. But parsley can cause gout and kidney stones, so you could take.....

*flings self off cliff*

Licorice is a known estrogenic.

What does estrogenic mean?

I only ask, because I've been scoffing loads of licorice lately :) can't get enough of the stuff!

(I know, I'm probably just addicted to the sugar  ).

I use that Bach Rescue remedy stuff and it's good, and if I'm really anxious I use aconite (a homepathic remedy) which comes in little tablets that you eat, and that calms me right down. I also take a multivitamin each day too.

You're not supposed to use anything with valerian in if you're on prescription medications for blood pressure as valerian can lower your blood pressure as well (the pharmacist I consulted told me that).

When I'm feeling a bit run down, I also take some of that vitamin tonic stuff (tastes like cough mixture) as B vitamins are supposed to be good for stress and general feeling rundownness. Could be a placebo but I've noted definitely improvements after bouts of serious ill health.

My mother swears by that echinacea stuff but I think it's a pile of crap. Then again, my mother refuses to accept that her kidney problems of a few years back were anything other than 'the flu', and in fact, believes all illness to be in the mind and anyone suffering any form of illness to indicate weakness and attention seeking behaviour

I used Milk Thistle tablets when I was drinking alot about 5 yrs ago. I do believe my hang overs were less severe, and I hope that it helped protect my liver somewhat

Bach Rescue Remedy for stress/anxiety (possibly cause of the brandy) and Garlic for colds. Drinking lemon juice and hot water for cleansing first thing in the morning.

There are several tonics available for general well being. I think Nanny used to have some tonic wine on occasion Dub, helped dilute the home made I guess;)

Definately NOT Bucky though, vile, vile stuff

I thought Bach was a load of bollix TBH - we were given some when we were caring for El Jugs mum as we were pretty stressed, but it remained untouched as I've tried it before and didn't notice any difference.

But then we went to pick our new (to us) dog up from the rescue and they gave him some before the 5 hour car journey. He travelled really well, it seemed to work on him, he was a hyperactive tornado for the first two weeks we had him, so it must've done something! Still sceptical tho, perhpas she really drugged him and conned us! :D

What I do like is camomile tea, me and El Jugs havea cup before bed, it's like stoners tea, it is really calming - I notice the calming effect from that in a way that I never did from Bach. Also comfrey for injuries, you make a poultice. Iainmc taught us how to do this. He broke his shoulder, used comfrey and his own gp could not believe how fast it healed. I think comfrey extracts are used in modern medecine.

Echinacea, yep, used that, doesn't work. Had more colds when I took it.

Just read this wiki article on Snake Oil. Interesting! It is still used in Chinese medicine, as it was originally, and claimed effects may be due to the high EPA content of the Chinese Water Snake... ;)
