Fair enough - it's hair-splitting anyway, the difference between psychiatric "hospitals" and psychiatric "institutions". I was going to say the place Lecter's in doesn't look much like a hospital, but psychiatric institutions don't.

hospital would refer to treatment where as institution would mean lock someone away to be forgotten about? if anything the on in the film looked more like a prison. but in saying that a doctor was a head of the facility and then there was that nurse called barney. not sure though.
Me neither. There's a distinction between ordinary wards and secure units, for instance, and there must presumably be a third category (say Broadmoor?) for people who are serious convicted criminals but are not considered sane.
