I'm seeing a little old cherubic bloke saying it and Jimmy Stewart being fished out of cold water.

Cheesy to you, one of the best films ever made to the rest of the world.

Great films are a lot more than "plot summaries", especially when they were made by Michael Powell one of the few truly visionary directors this country has ever produced.

^^^ spot on. Along with Stanley Kubrick, one of the few directors I've gone out of my way to acquire all of his films on DVD.

One of the regrets of my life was missing Michael Powell giving a talk and Q&A session at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff circa 1988. Finishing off my degree project for a hand-in had to take priority

I'm finding i can't watch hollywood filums, whereas Ealing Comedies and Philadelphia Story and almost anything with Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart you just want to settle down on sofa with things round you and lose yourself in.
