Film of 'A Scanner Darkly'

I'm really looking forward to this now. The trailer looked cool & I fucking love Before Sunrise & Before Sunset.
Edit: We're going tonight!

I enjoyed it, it was funny and bleak at the same time, definitely want to read more dick now:)
rrraaah, missed "humour" opportunity, loads of us geeky computer types will piss ourselves laughing if you put lots of smilies and the sentence: "i definitely want more Dick now" :p :o

(or maybe not...erm)

...anyway.

was the film good?

Pretty amazing animation. As my mate said afterwards: "Wow ...how did they do that? Winona Ryder's tits are DEFINITELY not that big in real life."

I've just been to see this, and I thought it was amazing. Left me with a strong desire to get absolutely wasted though :o Kind of wish that I'd read the book first.

Still worth seeing but not brilliant. Think i'll read the book & watch it again.

Nooooo.... I've only seen the 20 minute taster so far, but I can guarantee that the book will only leave you even more disappointed in the film. No film has ever matched Philip K Dick's vision, even Blade Runner which I love. Just judge the film on it's own merits otherwise it'll be left wanting.

SAw it at the weekend, excellent adaptation and the style fitted the story - Robert Downey Jr acted / animated everyone off the screen

Top film, definitely one destined for cult status I reckon. I thought RDJ and Woody Harrelson were fantastic working off each other ('Dude! Don't blame the drugs!'), Ryder looked *lush* and the rotoscoping added the air of unreality and the feeling of being on drugs...and there are some proper laughs to be had out of it in the first 2/3...

I'm really warey (sp?) of seeing this> I'm a big PKD fan and every film adaptation up till now just doesnt come close to the complexety of his writing.

Although i'm intrigued by this animation process.

i am a fan of his too and this film is defintiely the best adaption of his stuff that's been done, in keeping to the spirit of his writing. It's very entertaining too, and I thought it went very quickly....

just back from seeing this, (havent read the book) and enjoyed it quite a bit. The shapeshifter coats got pretty hard to watch at times (would have helped if i'd been wearing my glasses!)

Saw it last night and loved it - RDJ and Woody Harrelson were great together - if only paranoid stoners were that entertaining in real life ;)

Deinfitely want to see it again.

so true, that would be hillarious, loved WH character, he was crazy, RDJ character was a bit of a bastard really, damn him, damn him to hell.

I don't think the rotoscoping added anything to it and it didn't make it look like a drug experience, even when they were deliberately trying to do that - then it just looked silly. I think this would have been done better straight, esp. the best bits which were the RDJ/Woody/Keanu together scenes. The morphing suits could have been done with a cgi effect, and probably better. It was an ok film, which at least makes you think a bit. Would like to read the book now though.

I didn't like it... it left me feeling rather peculiar and my eyes hurt like fuck.

the Woody Harrelson/Robert Downey jr scenes were great tho!

Saw it last night, as with most of the above comments, thought it wasvery good. RDJ was excellent and stood out for me, and bounced well off Harrelson. Rory Cochrane was really good too, especially considering I'd only ever seen him holding Horatios jacket open in CSI Miami.
My only complaint was that I found it incredibly hard to hear some of the (longer) speeches, esp when the character lowered their voice even slightly. Anyone else get this, or am I just going deaf?

I'd like to see a film version of Galactic Pot Healer. I am pretty certain it couldn't work as a film. Though I suppose in a sense it didn't work as a book.

no I think that was intentional, part of the whole disorienting thing with the animation and that. meant to make you a bit queasy and uneasy.

Really? I can understand them doing it (and doing it quite well for most of the movie) with the animation, but with the sound too? That was just annoying!!
Especially as it seemed to affect RDJ's words the most, and it was his I found most entertaining.

BTW, went to watch it at the Electric at Notting Hill last night, never been there before, and booked a sofa for the GF's birthday. Instead of Ice Cream they served chipolatas and mash!

Rotoscoping is a CGI effect mate - this was shot straight to digital stock, same as waking life cos it makes the effects overlays a bit more straightforward in post.

While I also found the sound levels on RDJ annoying sometimes, I also kept thinking it was supposed to work like that - that kind of 'Did I hear that' feeling you get when you've been up on speed for a few days.

it left me feeling rather peculiar [/quote

PKD would have been most pleased with that response :D

So the advice would be, watch it after being up on speed for a few days?

Fine by me.....! My first thoughts were to watch it next on some shrooms, but it's good to have a plan B....

I actually went on to do a load of class As after seeing it on Saturday evening and had to make a conscious effort not to remember the bugs from the start and freak out.

Watching it after a few days on speed...could work. Definitely think watching it AFTER drugs would be preferable tho...
