Fifth test thread

As for changes to the england team, cannot believe folk are calling for them.

i'd prefer to keep the same 11, but if jones doesn't recover, then they need to replace him...

Is Jones really that bad a wicket-keeper? I mean he's never been Jack Russell, but his keeping during this series would embarass a lot of county cricketers...

(definitely shouldn't be dropped though)

Collingwood isn't really a bowler. If he's in as a batsman he has the advantage of giving you another bowling option but I don't think they could put him in to replace Jones.

But as we are 2-1 up, surely the Oval test is making sure that we don't lose, it's the aussies to win....... so we need to bat forever, and not to concentrate on how we bowl them out.....

Definitely not the attitude to go to the Oval with. We're the better team, we should go out to win it, no backing off now.

No way. With the way the teams have been playing, and the speed of games, it's just impossible to aim to bat out a whole game with no rain breaks. It would be an absolutely suicidal way to approach the game.

... so my new carrer as a cricket strategist is out then...... didn't mean that any team could bat for 5 days, but that the emphasis is now on runs not wickets..

I think the balance changes a bit. There's no point going for a declaration if that looks like a gamble, it's better to play for a draw. Given five days play though it's very likely that there'll be a result so the emphasis is still on having the best team possible and trying to win the game. I think the extra bowler has given England a big advantage in the series, and I don't think you can give that up.

We do need to get a big score on the board but that's true of any Test. Get over 400 again in the first innings and we're in the box seat (again). We still have to bowl them out twice though to be sure.

NO declarations......

Saw a brief interview with Duncan Fletcher today and it appears there aren't going to be any changes to the side, the only question is about Jones fitness and that is being reviewed daily.

I reckon if we can win, we try to win - that's the mentality of the champion. How many times have the Aussies drubbed us 4-1? recently? They didn't need to win games, but they did.

I agree, no stupid declarations though, but that's not going to happen.

I really, really hope we don't just go for the draw knowing it will get us the series. Whenever English teams do that we get thrashed...

I don't think we will - I think Vaughny will just say, same again lads, don't do anything daft. That'll be about it I reckon.

Quit your low expectations man! I know i go the other way, but we're far too good to go for the draw.

The only possible fly in the ointment is the press, but luckily i think we're just too good this time to let that become a factor.

3-1, and this time the easiest of wins to come.

Imagine if we'd had to chase 180 t'other day? We've seen what Warne can do on the fourth day never mind fifth.

If we lose the toss and field on Thurs....

Typical reserved Englishman me you see :D

Whatever happens, it's been a wonderful series and we've competed and sometimes dominated the Aussies. I am happy.

For all those interested, Hussey has been called up for Aus 'A' squad for the Pak trip, so it's either Hayden or Hodge come Thurs. I say this becasue Hussey was Aussies best bat against us during the ODI series, and there was a rumour he'd be in for Haydos.

Edit: Actually Hussey, Hodge AND Tait are in the 'A' squad, which means they'll all stay around (though Hussey isn't in the official Ashes squad) untill the Ashes finishes or none will be involved in the final Test.

Aus first match in Pak is 11 Sept which clashes with the Oval.

Why am posting this rubbish when I'm not even Australian you may well ask?

I. Don't. Know.

Indy today reports that the early forecast for next week shows low pressure swinging in from the Atlantic bringing wind and rain with it.

Aussies may get lucky and squeak a narrow draw again then ;)

if I were Oz, I'd go for broke and play Macgill AND warner

think England could struggle against that.....

Macgill has the highest average of wickets taken per match than any other Ozzie bowler on this tour....

No. The ECB.

My point is , most of the tickets being sold aren't identifiable on the site, so only the buyer and seller would know which tickets to cancel.

Admitadly some of them have been silly enough to state the seat numbers
