I mean obviously he's a goth all that black clothing and that pasty complexion

i went to a neph gig for the fit blokes, too. but it was boring and i went and sat in the foyer cos my spiky gothette boots were hurting my feet.

i looked good, but i was far to cheerful and chatty to be a proper goth.

I used to like FON...they had a good heavy sound (goth was a small phase I went through in between metal and er....more metal)...

Incidentally I went to see 'the sisters' with a mate last week or so (they played the astoria)..very very poor. I know they have always used drum machine (obv) and tapes but at least early sisters had the chiming guitars now its just an industrial sludge, the guitarist and bassist they had just occasionally noodled over the tapes and eldritch looks like gary glitter (well hes bald anyway)....it was difficult to tell throught the ludicrous amount of dry ice. It was fun taking pictures of people old enough to know better though.

I went to see them in Nottingham @ Rock City a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was excellent.

I used to know this lot: they lived in the same town as me. In fact, I can remember being in Brighton in the 80's and bumping into Vince, their roadie and he got me a comp. I remember thinking "I can't see the band because there's too much smoke/dry ice". :D

I once heckled FotN so persistently Carl McCoy pouted at me and moved about a foot towards the other side of the stage.

And I will hurt badly anyone I hear comparing God Machine to them.

It's taken me a while to post on this thread because I've been searching the web for that photo of them in a dressing room somewhere, about to go on stage, where you can just see on a table in the background a packet of Homepride.

i hope you kicked the crap out of them for that. NOBODY tells lies about The God Machine

It should be a specific offence in law punishable by custodial sentence. In fact if there's one crime for which we should bring back capital punishment.....

God Machine = one of the best bands ever. And a nicer bunch of blokes you couldn't hope to meet. Truly sensational live too - big sound for a trio.

Anyone remember the film 'Hardware' that Carl McCoy guested in?

I did used to really quite like the Nephilim. Never covered myself in flour though. But I did use them as a soundtrack to when I was reading Storm Constantine's latest oeuvre. The shame.:o
"Where's the little man?"

Weren't they the Sisters lite?

Nah, Eldritch wouldn't have had anything to do with Aleister Crowley (as the Nephs did). It'd have made his own attempts to look mysterious and dangerous seem tawdry. :)

I bought a FOTN album on the basis that someone told me that the masterly "Scenes from the Second Storey" by the God Machine "Sounded like Fields of the Nephilim". I was most disappointed.

Which album?

Yeah. Fucking tragic that their career was cut short by the bass player's death. AMazing sound. Wish I'd seen them live. My all time perfect gig would be to see the God Machine play live at some crumbling old roman amphitheatre, or at the pyramids.

They were all just Joy Division and Bauhaus lite.

(edited expet the Sisters who ace)

FotN were nothing like Joy Division (Krautrock influences, nihilism, punk) or Bauhaus (art-rock, surrealism, glam, punk), "lite" or not.
FotN used the "Goth" vibe as a hook for their fascination with the occult, but neither their music or their lyrics resembled the bands you named in the slightest.

I say that as someone who saw Joy Division (only once unfortunately) live, and went to see Bauhaus , tSoM and FotN (as well as other "proto-Goth" bands) many times.

I recall these fuckers wearing cowboy gear (circa Clint Eastwood) spray on dust and a fondness for Carol's Liber Null & Psychonaut book.
How scary were they?

My god people are defending late eighties goth. Its like reading an NME letters page back in 89 or something.

You poor sad old men. have a hug (((you))).
