In woodland, usually. While some mushrooms like particular trees (which helps to identify them), chanterelles are promiscuous.
There were some near me in mixed conifer woodlands a couple of weeks ago. But they're getting a bit past it now. They bloomed early because of the wet summer, I think.
(Oh, and never pick all of a crop. Leave some to set spore).
