Festivals where you can take toddlers along to.

Took my 4 year old to the Big Chill last year and it was beautiful.

Going again this year and my missus will be 7 months pregnant. I should've known better than to comment about all the pregnant ladies at last year's event :)

i quite like the idea of the big chill but have heard mixed reports about it

some friends have said it felt a bit "middle class and bland" and that theres not much on in way of entertainment of an evening - though with madge in tow thats not an issue in my book...

WOMAD would be better for you IMO -- and more for kids.
to be fair, womad don't tickle my fancy at the moment. madge gets v bored v quickly and it would be me making stuff in the workshops. perhaps when she's a bit older and can get more involved in the activities it would be a go-er....:)

Nice one - we're taking Lil'FA (1 year old today!) to Big Chill. Did you camp on the family bit? I don't know whether to bother; I've never been but it's supposed to be quiet and laid back (or middle class and bland ;) ). I suspect screams of 'BOLLOCKS' across the campsite at twat o clock in the morning will be rare...

I like the idea of Wickerman cos I have a thing for scooters, loads there isn't there?

Yup, one of the stages has been associated with scooterists since the beginning.

What does concern me about Wickerman tho is the reports that it has been found by the neds like TITP & that last year ws not nearly as pleasant an experience as the early festivals.

You've caught me out there marshall, it's a new one on me altogether.

Mean Fiddler (these days, in effect Clear Channel Entertaimnment   ) means approach with caution as far as I'm concerned, but if the MF organisation is sufficiently low key and not pushing too much of a corporate presence, there's loads else about the festival on that website that looks potentially interesting ...

Other than that can't help I'm afraid ...

Cheers, Will - agree completely about MF, but it's only 10 mins down the road from me, so I'll be checking it out.

:)

Yeah, we did camp in the family bit, even though I'm from a working class background

It was great and we met lots of other lovely families.

How did you get in then? Oh OK, you nicked a 3-wheeler pram and kitted your baby out in JoJo Maman Bebe didn't you? Cunning...

I think we'll be OK as long as we hide Lil'FA's tattoos, they're a bit common.

I have been thinking about taking lil'Kitten to a festie this year, day only mind you. I mentioned it to a friend and she nearly had a fit, ''You can't take her to a festival! What are you thinking? It will upset her!''
I have doubts now, she is 1 next week and IMO will enjoy the atmosphere and the other kiddies there.
Should I wait until next year?
Anyone else considering/had any experince taking a 1year old to a festival?

It really all depends what sort of festival we are talking about here. Your friend probably has this mental image of festivals being just a drunken scrum in front of the stage at V, Reading, Leeds etc & there's no way I'd contemplate taking kids to any of those events. But most of the festivals that people have mentioned in this thread are tiny by comparison and far more civilised and in most instances have facilities and entertainment laid on for the little ones. So as long as you don't mind carting buggies & all the stuff you need around with you for the day/weekend I say go for it. Thousands do.

Current rumour says Earthwise might have a particularly good toddlers' space this year.

My youngest went to her first at 6 weeks, which was a doddle. Toddlers are so much, much harder - they run off , get lost, fall over, don't like the food, want to go home, contract diseases, find the sand pit endlessly fascinating and actually enjoy puppet shows at 9 a.m.

Relahni you are a fool to even contemplate taking a toddler to a festival and thinking you might have a good time

but they are not as stressful as   teenagers

Fruitstock in Regents Park is great for kids
Hardly a festival though - just a marketing exercise for smoothies (drinks that is, not people - though it might be both)

There are a few stages though, last year there were some pretty big artists performing (cant remember any names but i promise there were)

Last year i lost a bloody nice mobile at fruitstock, but it was diligently handed in to a lost property stall so i got it back

Again I'd recommend the Big Green Gathering. Apart from the actual kids' field most of the other areas have children's activities and on the whole the site is as 'child friendly' as it can be.

We run a toddler and baby space in the campaigns field - come and see us ;)

:( That was me trying to be 'child friendly', usually we actively discourage toddlers from disrupting our nice festival blag.

My daughter will be 3 soon - reckon it's time for her to experience a festival..

Recommend me one please.

Lil'FA loved Big Chill last year. Lots for her to do (big top set up with loads of supervised activities, entertainers all over the shop, tons of other kids), the family campsite was friendly and well run (and close to the car park to go and get more wet wipes  ) and there was food/drink available at stupid o' clock in the morning (ie around 6ish when Lil'FA decided it was time to get up ). Oh yeah, by the massage/healing bit, there were loads of toys (bikes/balls/paints/paper/glitter etc) with helpers there to cover them in paint/glitter etc while we watched from a safe distance with beer & spliffs...

We were lucky with the weather and we went with mates who also have kids so we could share babysitting (ie me and mrs FA went on the lash one night, our mates the next). A lot of people took their kids out with them at night but we couldn't be arsed (and wanted to get fucked up  ).
