"Festivals": the end of season debrief

The Dualers -- a local ska act from Canterbury, old mates of my sister's, who had a minor Xmas hit last year I think. Wasn't expecting much but they were fantastic, with a brilliant ska version of Fix You by the execrable Coldplay.

they were on Lamarr's show recently and were great, as was Lamarr's failure to recognise Fix You :D

Ta, I'll try and look it up on listen again.

Good luck to them -- nice lads, good backing band, been into their ska since school, still busking, and the whole setup's very much a family operation. I think their debut album's just out :)

to add: nice youtube busked version here

Ashton Court, Bristol, July
Fine weather both days, enjoyed some of the acts but not the very in your face Orange (and other) branding and the overpriced day tickets.
How much were the day tickets?

started off with Global Gathering - which was good, but definitely a messy one. I can imagine that if you weren't into the music or VERY into your drugs it wouldn't have been terribly enjoyable. The toilets were frankly obscene, and I'm normally of the grin and bear it variety when it comes to festival loos. Daft Punk, however, were mind blowing. The criminal element was a little bit intimidating too - we all like to party with our chemicals every once in a while, but occasionally the curtain gets pulled back and you click on to how scary and real some of it actually is. Case in point, a 5am trip to the loo on my own when i accidentally walked into global gangland - suddenly became aware that I was the only girl around that I could see and there was lots of REALLY SCARY old hard looking scallies, pushing each other and squaring up to fight and saying things like, "i told you you weren't meant to deal round this part of the country" - cue me thinking, country??!! that sounds a bit big - and trying to walk off as quickly and inconspicuously as I could.
Charging 3 quid for a bottle of water in the main arena where there aren't taps at a festival where pretty much everyone is taking ecstasy is also stupid and dangerous.
the poi tent was a great idea though, loved that
definitely an enjoyable weekend.

the big chill - worked at this one. Lovely, they put so much effort into makin gyou have a good time. The way they just GIVE you lovely proper good blankets whereas at Leeds they will charge you 7 quid for some shitty old one. And the grounds are beautiful. Probably my favourite festival of the summer, although the girl performing hardcore sex acts on herself onstage in lost vagueness at 2 in the morning when everyone was mashed was a little ... bewildering? couldnt bear to look and couldn't look away. Definitely a guardian readers festival, but a part of me isn't really bothered that it's so thoroughly aimed at middle class jdfls.... theres less shit around, a nice atmosphere and no dicks trying to punch you and passing out in pools of their own vomit. Definitely going to be back next year.

Lafffest - put on by acquaintances from a local band (http://www.laffin.co.uk) in a local field, but it was actually fucking wicked.. i was expecting a couple of tents and a stage but fair doos to them they had a proper fucking set up, portaloos, psy trance area and a live band area.. camping bit etc.. it was mint, to be honest, and only a fiver, and theyre looking at trying something a bit bigger next year, so fair play that was a class one, good job lads

Leeds - standard Leeds, always good. Pearl Jam, the dance tent friday night, The Dresden Dolls, Tilly and the Wall all stick out.
Theyd definitely sorted some of the security issues from last year - they took a much less extreme approach, obviously favouring appeasement, allowing campfires and having much less overt security. then on sunday brought out the big guns, very visible security, bang straight on anyone as soon as there was trouble. Looked like people were shaping up for some naughtiness and there were definitely more dodgy looking day ticket holders, but thanks to the rain nobody kicked off. lots of mud though, but hey, since when was that a drawback! took an oz to sell thinking it'd go over the weekend and sold it all in about 40 minutes whilst very pissed. Also vaguely weirded out by the amount of polish workers - I don't mind the poles, they're grafters and theres one who comes into the shop I work at pretty regularly who i have a bit of a flirt with, but it was a little sobering when chatting to the workers - "So how long are you working for? do you get to go and explore the festival when you're done?" "12 hours on 12 hours off" "i hope they're paying you well " *wry smile* guess it's just more work for them. didn't feel terribly safe all the time either, and BOY do they cash farm you. lots of fun though, general leeds madness abound

next year, hopefully the same again, plus Glastonbury, Glade, wickerman, end of the road if the line up grabs me. (could take or leave leeds and global next year though, unless the lineups are super)

really wish I was going end of the road this year!

hey killkill...who did you work for at big chill? i was gonna steward for oxfam but bailed on that one..i felt it wasnt worth working for a freebie ticket and couple of meals after my experiences stewarding at latitude for oxfam.i kind of wish i had gone to big chill now,but in the end i had too many other commitments.next summer i plan to work at a festie or 2 via workers beer tent, you choose which charity you are donating yr wages to..im not choosing oxfam haha:p

also i got really angry reading about yr time global gathering..i dont like the kind of scene you describe with the violent criminal elements(who does?) but MUCH MUCH worse than that is NOT PROVIDING WATER TAPS! really that should be illegal:mad: they are endangering people just to make more cash.i want to know who these promoters are! sick greedy idiots!

£9= on each day -- OK not bank busting if you're working, and (like me) used to going to lot of festivals anyway. And you got a fair amount for it too.

But I certainly know some people in Bristol who were put off by that price, and Ashton Court used to have its roots as a free/very cheap community festival, inclusive for all..

That's an utter disgrace and should be banned as a festival organisers' practice.  :(

No taps at all? I thought that was mandatory for a festie licence ...

It's a disgusting practice – I hope that the money-grabbing fuckers never end up with a dehydration-related death at their festivals.

Just looked at the Secret Garden website... sounds like they are going ahead for next year (the earlier finish time has secured that as a possibility). Rah! And they'll be offering reduced-price tickets to this year's attendees due to that and the 'overcrowding in the camping area' (didn't seem worse than any other festy to me, and I didn't hear anyone complaining  , but what the hell)

Its went from being £1.50 to 9 quid in about 5 years, plus the Orange involvement has seen it slowly turn into another generic medium size festival. It still has a community feel but it's losing its inclusive feel as well as feeling less Bristolian. Bands like Simple Minds don't help one bit.

Have absolutely no disagreement with that.

May not go next year -- not sure.

that *HAS* actually put me off going :(

Exit Festival, Serbia

Best festie i have been to that isnt called Glastonbury.

4 nights, the most friendly festie crowd from all over europe, £50 a ticket, pills like they used to be, £1 a beer, no corporate shite, the most amazing venue (fortress over looking the river danube), no sound restrictions and the best dance arena in the world. ever.

fuck UK festivals, were all being mugged money wise and Mr Health & Safety ripped the guts out of them.

I'll still go unless it's stupid money to get in, but if it's bumping local bands for medium sized London based bands or fading rock gods, then i will knock it on the head.

Glade was near the same. No taps or bloody hard to find ones near the big tents.

Water could have been £2 but errrrr. I dont really remember.

Mr Boringly Logical posts .... :p

I see your point, but it sounds like both the Glade and Global Gathering could have done with Mr Health and Safety enforcing some free water availability!!!!! ;)

very true

its more the sound level department i get angry at.

glade have issued an apology for not doing anything about the water. its not like its there first festie, piss poor.

eta - they get my respect for being honest about security though.

Fair enough Dan :)

Bumping because this went to page 2 and there must still be a few other slacker stoner summer festie goers who have a few idle thoughts to add about their festie vists ...

Lets here them!

Wickerman, Scotland-lovely chilled festie in beautiful surroundings with decent prices and diverse artists and punters-dancing to Eek a mouse in the sun still highlight of the summer
Bestival-great festival, colourful and vibrant with madness going on everywhere-also superb acts but let down a tiny bit by expensive prices, queus and over zealous security with no alcohol allowed in main arena. Still going next year though-fancy dress was fab:)

That's what I thought...There's no way I'm gonna pay, and then put up with that kind of shit. It's just not worth it.

yeah, something like that just sums up the "attitude" of a place if you know what I mean:rolleyes:

ohh, alright then, I can do idle thoughts..

Off The Tracks Spring - I can't remember what happened here
Download - rockin' dust bowl
Sunrise Festival - insolvent eco-mash up - the perfect antidote to Download!
Hyde Park Calling - all about Roger Waters who was ace.
The Glade - HOT! HOT!
Womad - a bit below average but enjoyable nonetheless
Summer Sundae Weekender - fantastic city festival (but I'm from Leicester and very loyal)
Beautiful Days - good friends good party, bit low on content for the price - they ought to get some sponsorship! :D
Off the Tracks Autumn - great food
Bestival - the last hurrah, with some growing pains, but a blinding finale to the year.

A great year really considering no glasto - I've had a ball. As i sit here with a streaming cold, surveying my worn camping gear strewn about the living room - a torn tent, the zip bust on my sleeping bag, my dusty dead camera and winter just around the corner, all I can say is - roll on next year!

I wonder who was spreading the cold at Bestival. I never get colds, well not very often. Me and Rocketman came down with awful ones on Tuesday :(

Other peeps on the Bestival boards mentioned it too, although some of them i think were self inflicted ;)

.p.

I put it down to an unusually high amount of random snogs ..and not all of them female! ...that's the last time I wear a cowboy hat with a big sunflower on it :D
