Festival Season 2006 -- some dates and details!

William of Walworth

Festographer
R.I.P.
Well, once again it's that depressing time of year when summer still seems a very long way off, so this Festographer's sanity-and sunshine-seeking thoughts are naturally turning once again towards establishing a Festival Calendar for the coming summer -- 2006!

The following list is completely selective, with a big bias against including any ultra-corporate, ultra-mainstream events like the Carling Crap Label Weekender (aka 'Reading') and the Richard Branson's Profitable Beard Festival (aka 'V').

The list is also far from exhaustive. And for 2006, is largely based on 2005's list, with websites rechecked for new dates where possible. BIG THANKS to han/the mods for archiving the 2005 thread and saving me quite as much work as in January 2005 -- lots of editng done though!

But feel free to add more events to this thread as you think of them/hear about them, but try to do what I do and include DATES (most important) and if you know it a location as well, and a link to any website.

So here are a few dates to be pencilled (perhaps!!) into your summer diaries!
Some of the dates are so far provisional for 2006 -- 2006 versions of the 2005 dates.

Festival Season 2006 Calendar!

They have lots of folk-influence stuff, and lots of weird stuff during the day. Regulars include the Weird Attractors and the Peatbog Faeries. they had Desmond Dekker last year. They usually have one biggish name. But loads and loads of different stuff you won't see anywhere else. Lots of cool Scottish stuff. A dance tent where my mate Frogpocket John usually plays too.....
Also has Sams Sauna - the only place to be to keep warm at night... mmmm... nekkid hippies
And a cinema teepee and a story-telling longhouse and and and.... well, you just have to go really. lots for kids too.
Sunday night always ends with a speech from the organiser and then the piper plays.... and then he plays and plays and people drum and sing and go mental dancing..... sounds odd and rubbish but its just the most amazing atmosphere.
Oh, and the bar sells lovely organic beer and cider and heather ale. Yum

Newcastle Green Festival ... FYI we get something like
10,000 people over 2 days, and will be having 8 music stages this year, all free and in a lovely city centre park. Oh yeah, and lots of green stuff, very kid friendly etc. etc.
And with more news :

WOMAD website
Ticket sale date now confirmed : Wednesday 15 March 2006 -- weekend ones generally sell quickly.

And ultra-annoyingly, the next one (Cambridge Folk Festival, see below) clashes for the second year running!!! with WOMAD. I recently received an email from WOMAD explaining their take on this clash :
WOMAD said:
Many thanks for your email, and for your feedback.

The WOMAD festival weekend is set as the last FULL weekend in July (ie
not overlapping into August at all) - the reason for not holding it any
earlier is to avoid as much as possible any overlap with the school
term. The school terms in many regions changed slightly about 4 or 5
years ago to finish slightly later than in previous years, which is why
we are now sticking to the latest possible weekend in July.

We don't have any plans to change this because as I'm sure you're aware
many families attend WOMAD and also a significant proportion of our
audience are employed in academic fields, so as many people take the
Thursday and the Friday off in order to attend, we need to be well
clear of the end of term as far as possible.

We hope this explains the situation...

All the best,

The WOMAD Festival Team

Shambala this year (2006) is CANCELLED!!
Posted in December by an organiser, over on the forums at EFestivals :
Shambala said:
Hello there.
Thought I'd clarify the issues - I am one of the festival organisers at Shambala, and part-deal with licensing.

We did have a few problems last year with traffic, a few extra punters and we will need to look at how the festival stewarding works. But neither during or after the event was there any official suggestion of prosecutable breaches of license. We wish the event could have gone by without pissing off locals, but ce la vie. It's only one weekend but the Bristish public is very sensetive in this way.

For info, we will not be holding Shambala at all next year, to let it calm down.
It is not possible for a license to have been assessed for this year yet, never mind turned down. Having had a full debrief with all relevant authorities, all would consider another application, but with much stricter conditions to protect local residents from disruption.

Friday 11 and Saturday 12 August 2006

Friday 18 to Sunday 20 August 2006
Beautiful Days, Escot, near Exeter, Devon
This is an excellent festival organised by the Levellers (who will headline on one of the days) -- they aim for an old school countercultural Green Fields of Glasto type atmosphere (and it works!). Beer provided by an excellent local brewery, Otter Brewery of Honiton. In 2005, the licence was expanded to cover approaching 10,000 (instead of 6,000) people. Much enjoyed by several Urbanites last August!
Beautiful Days website
Levellers website
Tickets for 2006 very likely to go on sale around February 15th (and on February 1st, for members of the Levellers fanclub, On The Fiddle). I'm told the prices have gone up for 2006 though. And they have, by a shocking £11= -- now £92= for a weekend ticket and £87= for discounted OTF members.

cheers for the mention William, maybe one year you'll even venture up north - only 20 quid on the train if you book early ;)

Oh well -- with that weekend (11-12 August) becoming empty, there's always the chance to sample the Endorse It In Dorset Festival. Flounder, an occasional Urbanite and friends with Pronghorn, is one of the organisers, along with those excellent Cowpunks whose brainwave it was to get this festie together.

Endorse It In Dorset Festival poster

I will add this one to the main list soon ...

Sticky Status.... YES! (assuming the good and hallowed Bill of the Worth can manage the editiing :) )

Poss. additions, for festies where people know...

Camping: Yes/No
Camp Fires: Yes/No
Own Alcohol: (Camp Only/ Not Arena / Anywhere / ????)
Official Close: xx pm
"Improv" close: xx pm

That would take a lot of research to do it for all festivals, of course myself and others will know for some, but I can't cover everything. Wherever possible I do check and provide links to the website for the festival.

cheers for the mention William, maybe one year you'll even venture up north - only 20 quid on the train if you book early ;)

I'm very tempted, we don't have any plans for early May Bank Holiday this year ...

What do you reckon Stig??!! :D

Yep, I'm up for that, I reckon!

We'd have to sort out staying one night though, as it'd be silly to go all that way for a day trip. (no camping my arse. ;) )
...I'm sure B&Bs are tuppence-ha'penny up there, anyway, though eh? ;) :D

thread stuck.

That Knockengorroch festie sounds ace. Will definitely think about that one.

I'm also quite tempted by the Wicker Man festie and the Green Man festie <runs off to find dates> :)

Thanks for Stickyising ... :)

Not sure about the BGG, it may end up being one to many amnmidst all the others.
