femmes fatales in film...

??? is dishonest with/misleads Bogie, how exactly? Have i missed the scenes where she is secretly shagging Eddie G!!??

Claire Trevor as Gaye Dawn, maybe.

you're right about Faye I suppose bristle, tho her dishonesty does help to drive the plot along, its not the, or even a, key motor. San Young.....mmmm, there must be a ff in there, and she's certainly the closest..

Bacall in Key Largo.

or maybe in To Have and Have Not

"You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."

what planet are you on?!

being foxy and having decent lines doth not a femme fatale maketh :p

I'm no film studies student, so my assumptions about the defining characteristics of the femme fatale may be way off the mark.

Dishonesty is there in both Vertigo and Chinatown.

Perhaps bristle or belboid could enlighten me?

I'd go for a woman who uses her (incredibly impressive) sexuality to ensnare our hero and lead him into a number of highly dangerous situations. Normally it is she who holds the key to any mystery, but who misleads us into what the true nature of the mystery is.

Other key/good words include alluring & vamp

Oh this is a harsh thread  Yer very picky about yer femme fatales.

Apparently she's a femme fatale in this one ... but I haven't see it. :(

...and ideally there should be no happy ending for the hero/antihero - the femme fatale should bring about their destruction, either wilfully or coincidentally.

the ff is single-minded - she has but one aim, and will do anything to achieve it.

she is deceitful, seductive, ruinous.

I see. That's Bladerunner out then, n'est-ce pas?

Dunaway brings about her own (desired) destruction.

Can't even remember how 'Vertigo' ends - does she kill herself too? :o

still, should raise a titter down blockbuster:

"excuse me, i'd like to rent lauren bacall's 'dark passage', please..."

yeah but, we all know that that BladeRunner ending is a cop out tho

Dunaway brings about her own (desired) destruction.
mmm, not entirely. it's too tragic as well, in noir the characters pretty much deserve their demises.

No, not quite. She is far more of a passive victim at the end.

:D

That reminds me of when i used to work in the Hyde Park Cinema in Leeds.

*ring ring*

Shoddy: Hello, Hyde Park Cinema

Punter: Could you tell me what you've got on tonight?

*looks down*

Shoddy: My new jeans and a corduroy shirt. Why do you ask?

your just gutted because I pissed on your Red Rock West fire :p

bollocks you did - you've already admitted you don't know what happens in the film, that you didn't like it and that you didn't watch it all the way through :p

bit longer than mine tho! I do like the bit about the 'mausoleum'

Hannah is surely a straightforward baddie, no ambivalence there.

I'm thinking more of Hannahs relationship with Sebastian than anything else ! If you take out the rest of the film her manipulation of him is a perfect example of the femme fatale IMO !

Actually I have watched it all the way through and more than once ( I bloody own it on video ) . Me not liking it has nothing to do with the fact that your wrong !

then you really are a cretin! you completely misunderstand what a femme fatale is or what her role is in a film!

I'm using her as an example of an isolated incident in film not the film as a whole . And it's aperfect example given the context I'm using and the actual definiton of "femme fatal"

A French phrase with the literal translation "fatal woman." A femme fatale is a sensuous, alluring woman who often leads men into danger or trouble.

A femme fatale is a stock character, a villainous woman who uses the malign power of sexuality in order to ensnare the hapless hero.

and by those definitions I'll agree with you about Red Rock West now*

* just remebered the bit about the money from the bank robbery or something !
