That was a really interesting piece, thanks for putting up the link :) I think that's something that could definitely be expanded on

Glad you enjoyed it and I agree, it's interesting subject matter. :)

I think they had two drummers. I loved them. I still have the All Day Long 7 inch at home somewhere.

Leslie Noelle from The Red Aunts. They rocked properly,

Sheila E (not just for drumming but for mastering the whole range of latin percussion)

Evelyn Glennie on the classical side (not just female but deaf.... and still selling loads of tickets/ CDs)

just remembered, the Go! Team have 2 drummers, oneof them's a girl but she also plays keys and other stuff too

This won't be popular, but drumming depends too much on physical strength and stamina for women to be as good as men.

Ah, but the great percussionist Evelyn Glennie reckons that as long as women start drumming before puberty they're just as good, with just as much stamina.

Mind you, I'm sure you know better than her, phil.

i've been involved in some excellent djembe jams with women.

I hope by "djembe jams" you were jamming the bloody things (beloved of rhythmless muppets everywhere, along with bodhrans) into a skip!

I played the drums for many years, its fucking knackering. Yes, some women are stronger than some men, and yes, skill counts as well as strength, but basically the reason there aren't any great women drummers should be bloody obvious even to contrarian bastards like yourself.

Stamina is NOT a good measure of drumming skill, stamina is to do with keeping up sustained pace over a period of time and NOT anything to do with intricate timing and progressive patterns which IS what good drumming is all about

In the studio maybe. But if you're playing live, its all about stamina. Most people, male or female, will be exhausted after playing rock drums for an hour without a break, and towards the end of the set those with stamina will maintain chops that those without will lose.

Yeah I see what you mean in some ways but since there are 'Live' gigs that are performed every night with females drummers at locations all around the world, we can already establish that women are both suited to studio and live drumming can we not?

Sure. Obviously women can be very good drummers. But we haven't seen a *great* one yet, and I doubt we ever will.
