Nah - they'd more likely keep the cat in and send him on the local FIV cats trust, who would keep him until they can rehome him with someone who'll keep him as an exclusively indoor cat with no other cats around. I had a pet cat by that method once.
Woman came into work t'other day and said she was going to write to head office and the publishes because Six-Dinner Sid mentions Satan and that is wholly inappropriate for a children's book.
It might be worth checking the local paper/newsagents' windows/missing pet websites though. My cat went missing last year and we know he lived for four weeks after leaving our place.
When my cat was missing I would have been really pleased with anyone who fed him, but even more pleased if they'd traced me. I put loads of posters up but he was found a surprisingly long way away.
I can completely understand you not wanting to go round sticking photocopied posters on all the telegreph poles but it is worth being a little bit more alerted to 'missing cat' info.
