Favourite Stand Up Comedians

Russel Brand is the best 'new' stand up in a long long time. Don't understand why people don't like him - they just think of Big Brother and don't actually listen to a word he says and nearly everything he says is comedy gold

I don't like him on television because he is arrogant, repetitive and boring. Is it really "comedy gold" to talk about his "ball bags" and "dick sacks" repeatedly? Is it really "comedy gold" to say "don't get in touch with me in the way that Jade gets in touch with me...." every time? It is really "comedy gold" to throw food at the walls of the studio? Is it really "comedy gold" to sit on people's laps and pretend to shag their heads?

He is gross and unfunny.

But that's on telly. As a standup comedian, he is probably quite different. I have seen him live, but not since he started doing Big Brother. To be honest, he was only on stage for a few minutes, and the only impression I got was that he was tall and good looking :)

Well the last bit's right. ;)

I actually like the repetitive bits he does on Big Mouth (as they do change every time, hence the humour...)
Did you see him being interviewed on Jonathan Ross? It's on youtube. It's a good example of his natural funniness, when not using a script.

Mark Thomas, Rob Newman, Mark Billingham (who is also a seriously good crime writer) never fail me!

I almost forgot ...I saw a strange act by a comedian called Andrew Lawrence a few weeks back. Definitely different.

Anyone else seen this guy?

Seen him a few times, but only on TV. He is incredible!
The strangest (but definitely in a good way) looking and sounding person I ever did see.

recommended by a friend to henry rolllins' spoken words.
he's one great comedian.
well-read, humourous and poetic.

Yes, very, very funny, especially the later stuff.

But the thread's about contemporary stand up, muppet :p

Which is why I didn't mention the man himself, Bill Hicks.

Bill Bailey's good too, now I come to think of it. There was a woman called Jo caulfield (?) I heard on radio 4 once who had me pissing myself.
God, I'm rubbish at this.

*gets coat*

Look some of us are far too busy doing serious important stuff to read threads properly. In fact skim reading threads and consequntly making inappropriate posts is a mark of having a life.

so there. :p

But I agree - Bill Bailey's stand up is hilarious - anyone seen his Chris de Burgh skit? ('i want to save all the beautiful ladeees .. but let the ugly ones die')

fair play.

But if i post on a thread I usually make the token effort of reading the OP

:D

i'll second henry rollins - there's some great stuff of his on youtube. sort of reminiscent of bill hicks sometimes, or maybe it's just me.

others (off the top of my head): bill bailey, dylan moran, stewart lee, rob newman (seen him about 4 times), eddie izzard (though he sort of lost it a bit after glorious).

I used to hate him because of his first show, laughing at pilled up clubbers, shooting fish in a barrel imo, and a bit rich since he was a junkie himself.

I've changed my mind since though, he's brizza on BBBM, maybe his breakdown has given him a bit more humanity?

I like like my comedians to be drier than a pharaoh's parchment, so Jack Dee and Jimmy Carr score highly.

I did see the interview on Jonathan Ross, and I was surprised at how much I liked it. I thought he was funny, and came across as being intelligent and self aware. But I hate him on the Big Brother programmes, and I hated his attempt at a chat show.

*shrug*

Anyway, none of the above is standup, which is what this thread is about, so it's not relevant! :)

My favourite is Ross Noble.

Noble's excellent.

"I feel sorry for the deaf" [groans from audience]
"NO! Not in a patronising way. I think it's the fact that they've got to stay up till 4 in the morning to watch any decent telly."

(or words to that effect)

Also, on the BBC1 ident with the dancers in wheelchairs:
"Do you get the feeling there's three genuinely disabled lads lying just out of shot: 'Oi! Give us our chairs back, you bastards!'"

Went to the first of Richard Herring's 3 nights at the Lyric last night, helluva line-up.

Stewart Lee was on FIRST :D - and was as fantastic as ever, just astonishing. Dan Antopolski was pretty good but by his own admission a bit rusty.

Richard Herring was OK, he was only MC-ing so he didn't have much to do but drink..

and Andrew Lawrence was a revelation, probably the funniest live stand-up I've ever seen. Totally twisted, brutally funny.

This is interesting, since Gervais admits to being a crap standup :)

Apparently, he is a comedy actor rather than a standup, and only did standup after he had become famous, and was persuaded to do it for a dvd.

Or something like that.

Doesn't stop him being funny when doing stand up.

Rich Hall is very clever.

Did a fantastic bit about Tom Cruise and his films.

Can't find any decent links though

I saw Rich Hall do a fab comedy song on some prog or other. don't normally like comedy songs. I like him, even if he did slag off Dundee.

Mark Thomas is a lot of things. Funny isnt one of them. I feel a poll coming on.

Went to see him the other day, and he was exceedingly funny indeed.

Lee and Herring are good but patchy.

I've gone off comedy clubs. The last few times I've been I've been a bit disappointed. Too many of them, I suppose.

Stewart Lee on Sunday reminded me why he's the best.. Just takes the audience to breaking point with repetition where you can't breathe for laughing, even though you're laughing at him just talking bollocks. Takes balls...

The show I laughed at the most was Ross Noble's, about 4 years ago. So maybe him.

* misses the point of the thread *

Nowadays? Russel Brand I suppose, although I haven't seen him live live

Glad you made it fella. I had visions of you still be in the pub until closing. Thumbs up to your commitment and willing commuting skills at that stage of the weekend.

Lee and Herring are very good indeed.

Lee and Herring are very good indeed.

In the end, they didn't perform together, although Lee is appearing at every one of the Herring gigs, so maybe at another date...

Lee's rant about the British public voting the "Delboy falling through the bar hatch" routine the funniest TV moment ever ended up with him on his side banging his head against the floor and moaning "you see, Delboy was... standing up... and then he was.... lying down" over and over again was the funniest thing ever :)
