Favourite Roald Dahl Book

Georges Marvellous Medicine.
Every Saturday morning when my mum went shopping, my sister and I would cook up a storm in the hopes of making giant cats and chickens.

Danny The Champion of The World and Charlie and Fantastic Mr Fox. Every child loved The Twits.

I googled Boggis, Bunce and Bean and got that /\/\/\/\

It was made into an opera apparently......

Impossible to choose, but I've have to side with Matilda for now. Almost every singe adult in it was horrifying and ignorant, and it really summed up the feeling of what it was like to be alone and to find a friend.

And using your psychic powers to pretend to be the ghost your friends' murdered father? Let's see Harry do that in primary school, Rowling! :D

Yeah Danny The Champion Of The World for me - Dahl was supposed to be a reactionary old cove, which wouldn't surprise you reading his adult short stories, but his kids books seem quite subversive in contrast - Danny was, as kali says, a class war tale, and Fantastic Mr Fox was an inspiration for subversives everywhere - it even suggested future tactics for road protestors!

the witches

though i have great love for charlie and the chocolate factory, and george's marvellous medicine too....

I know it's probably all 'modern' and that, but they're supposed to be farmers ffs!

I think subversion is a pretty major theme in all of Dahl's childrens books. It's often about people doing things differently than everyone else, and toppling an evil order of some sort. It's a big part of their lasting appeal I think - kids love the idea of toppling some hallowed insitution.

Another thumbs up for Tales of the Unexpected - my parents got a shedload of those books for free with teabags when I was a kid, and I used to love reading all of these, frankly, nasty tales which rarely had a happy ending for anyone.

They're all good, but I think my favourite is James and the Giant Peach, mainly for its nostalgia value. Or maybe Boy, or Fantastic Mr Fox, or ... I give up.

It was always georges marvellouse medicine for me

it sparked of a love of potions and powders that has stayed with me to this day

I love that too. I had forgotten all about it.

My favourite ever childrens book was Up the Faraway Tree.

I think mine was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My daughter just can't decide between George's Marvellous Medicine, the Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox and Matilda (she so wants to be Matilda).

Probably one of the best short story writers ever, and definitely one of the best children's writers ever.

Surprised no-one's metioned Going Solo yet. Remember my dad didn't want me to read it when I was little  so I used to sneak into his study and get through a few chapters. That's the one I'd single out as I thought it was a really interesting story when I was younger and reread it loads.

Also a big fan of the Danny Champion of the World, 'The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me', the Twits, George's Marvellous Medicine, and the Witches.
