Favourite reggae album?

I confirm NVP's choice is excellent, because he burnt me a copy!

I listen to that Don Letts-compiled album a fair bit and it's :D

Go also for Horace Andy's Dub Box -- Rare Dubs, from the Jamaican living legend Mr A.

Completely forgot Horace. My two fave albums by him are Dancehall Style and In the Light. Both great.

I've got this record of Bob Dylan classics covered by Reggae artists which is pretty good.

But my vote goes for Linton Kwesi Johnson in general - not sure if I could pick out a favourite record though.

Handsworth Revolution - Steel Pulse

I've never heard that one before - just never got round to it - I've downloaded it and it's wonderful.

Ta for the recommendation. :)

Like Aswad, they started off doing some really good stuff but then they went all commercial. :(

Tis a great album true .... :)

SP are still playing (or a version of them are, anyway). Saw them at Beauiful Days in 2006 and WOMAD this year. Both times excellent especially WOMAD

Man In The Hills by Burning Spear would be my number one. Some good ones suggested upthread too.

That is a great lp as are most of the first Burning Spear albums Marcus Garvey and the dub lp Garvey's Ghost spring to mind.

That was one of the first reggae albums I bought ... :o

Still like it.

Me too.

Kiiiiiiiiiiing, where are your people noooooooooooooooooow??

Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaained and pacified?

Lots of the classics mentioned. My favourite is Right Time aka I Need A Roof - Mighty Diamonds. Beautiful conscious lyrics and three part harmonies over incredible "rockers" rhythms showcasing Sly Dunbar's drumming at Channel One.
Some Studio 1 and Treasure Isle should be included too, such as Bob Andy's Song Book, Johnny Osbourne's Truth & Rights, any Alton Ellis or Ken Boothe and any of the Duke Reid Rock Steady compilations.
Dubwise Keith Hudson's Pick A Dub, Well Charge (dubs to the above M Diamonds LP), Joe Gibbs' African Dub Chapter 3 and of course some King Tubbys such as:

The Duellers have done some pretty good stuff. If you are in the Kingston (upon Thames) area they are often performing on the street. i think they were the first buskers band to appear on ToTP (but could be wrong) They have a new album out, but I can't remember what it is called.

'African Dub Chapter 3' is a very good call - I've been listening to that for 20 years.

Others:

Prince Far I - 'Dubwise' and 'Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3'

Revolutionaries - "Earthquake Dub'

Ossie All-Stars: 'Leggo Dub' )pretty sure it uses many of the same sound effects as 'African Dub Chapter 3')

I'm having a listen to this at the moment:

Nice collection of varied Trojan stuff chosen by that bloke out of Radiohead.

That looks very good indeed...(and only £4.74 at itunes - for those unfashionable enough to believe in paying for music :) )

king tubby meets rockers uptown is a great album - my first real intro to dub, so it's still one of my favourites...

i have to confess much of my reggae is on comps, 12s or 7s, so album wise there isn't a lot to choose from. but the one i probably listen to the most is cedric 'im brooks' 'mystic light of saba' comp on honest jons a few years back - every single track is amazing, ans it has a cracking version of 'satta massa gana' on it too... :)

Reggae is the one area of music where I generally prefer compilations to full albums.

(Augustus Pablo being the exception that proves the rule)

That Keith Hudson one is sublime!!

Can anyone recommend me the best Yabby You album?

Blood & Fire had a good relationship with Yabby You so reissued some of his best stuff.

Best is the Jesus Dread set (which I'm always banging on about on here), but I also like Conquering Lion (originally released as Ram A Dam) and King Tubby Meet Vivian Jackson (aka Chant Down Babylon Kingdom), King Tubby's Prophesy Of Dub and Deliver Me From My Enemies.

He also produced some good singers, my favourite on LP are probably Michael Prophet's Consciousness and Wayne Wade's Black Is Our Colour.

The LP with Tommy McCook and Bobby Ellis is good instrumental roots too, called Blazing Horns.
