Also Dill: spaghetti bolagnese is more of a hearty soup without some kind of mince-style product in it.

What's the problem with eating meat substitutes if they taste nice and you like them? Why not, ffs?

Because there are so many delicious vegetarian recipes that are all about the vegetables.

I do think it is not being able to quite let go of meat based meals. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

:)

I can just about understand that.

If I went vegetarian though, I would just eat meals based around vegetables, and not bother having replacement meat products.

It is not like there is a shortage of delicious vegetarian meals or anything.

I don't know. It still doesn't make sense. Not for me, anyway.

I think that Quorn is aimed at the dieting meat-eating market just as much, if not more so than vegetarians. Just look at the labelling....

That shouts 'low fat', it doesn't mention 'vegetarian' or 'meat free' (in large print anyway)

I'm not really a fan. Their sausages are ok, but I prefer Cauldron ones. The escalopes are ok for a novelty but I don't think their up too much. I prefer veg, mushrooms and lentils

and it's shoving proper veggie food off the supermarket shelves.

This does piss me off. Supermarket 'veggie' sections just seem to be all quorn fake meat products.

I am not trying to be controversial!

I am just saying that there are plenty of simple vegetarian recipes out there that don't need meat-substitutes. It is not like there is a lack of them. That is what I would do if I were to become vegetarian.

I am not slagging anybody off for eating quorn.

:)

There are plenty of delicious pasta based meals. Doesn't mean I can't eat rice based ones as well.

Hardly. I've been veggie for over 20 years, so I think I've pretty much "let go" of meat. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy a substitute, if it tastes nice.

I think you are missing my point, really.

Seems more like your being pointlessly perverse than controversial.

Why not just have some vegetables instead of a synthetic product of questionable origin?

You can get all the protein you need naturally instead of having a meat-substitute burger.

What danny said makes the most sense to me.

Like I said, if I went veggie, I would just give up on meals that are based on meat altogether.

change the bloody record. just because you are or you aren't labelled "vegetarian" doesn't mean you can't eat something if you fancy it. jesus. sometimes I really fancy a bit of chicken, but I don't eat it. I dont' like the farming and murder thanks. But if I had a bit of quorn* instead, then where's the issue?

You can get all your protein and dietary requirements elsewhere if you like, but you don't have to just becuase you're "vegetarian" and therefore must be purer than thou. and you might hate tofu and lentils.

Actually, I think I remember reading somewhere that quorn wasn't invented as a meat substitue for veggies but as a cheap way to manufacture protein when they thought (during the cold war days) that we may need it some day in order to survive, when raising livestock may be difficult (post-nuke I guess).

*I probably wouldn't because it's weird fake-food, but some might....

Honestly, I wasn't criticizing anybody for their dietary choices or anything. I admire vegetarians.

Quorn itself just doesn't appeal to me, and I don't really understand its appeal when there are so many delicious vegetables to eat.

I am not criticizing those who do choose to eat it. Just to be clear.

Me neither. Mostly, Quorn is fairly shit. But there are plenty of meat substitutes that taste quite nice and can contribute to a meal. That's not fundamentally any different from having a slice of nut roast with your spuds.

I don't think of quorn as an alternative to meat any more than a carrot or potato is. I like quorn because it adds a texture and chewiness that I have yet to find in vegetables and pulses, I like how it can take on the flavour of whatever you stick it in too.
It IS handy for when meat eatears come over too though, some of my family have even said they liked quorn sausages more than pig ones.

The mince isnt bad at all, certainly better than cheap shit actual mince as far as texture is concerned and in the chili and spag bol Ive had it in, tasted fine.
Not really tried any of the rest of it but im suspicious of the sausages and chicken, we'll see no doubt, lol.

also, the quorn mince is really good for making spag bol. if you get a decent sauce going it soaks up a lot of flavour, is low calorie and much cheaper than disgusting mince!

i found the chicken pieces to be revolting though - tastes like plastic. yuck! :p

How the fuck do you make decent spag bol without a beef flavour? It's meant to be a thick beefy sauce, not a sea of tomato with a few random bits of fungi protein chunks

Quorn's ok, but when people start pretending that it's somehow better than the thing it's meant to be substituting you're on ropey ground. It's a different textural experience, but it's not a miracle product with chameleon properties.

That would depend entirely on your taste preference though, wouldn't it? I mean veggie bacon is nothing like the real thing, but I far prefer it. I'm not one of those veggies who's all precious and squeamish about meat either, but I never liked the salty, chewy, fatty bacon experience. Doesn't do it for me. Fried cardboard, on the other hand, I love. :D

errr - i don't think it's a miracle product, i said earlier i generally don't even like it that much  i was just saying the mince stuff can be useful as a meat substitute because it's good at soaking up flavour and i *personally* wouldn't want to eat mince. sorry if that got misinterpreted, but calm down
