the obvious choice, the magical Elizabeth I, how about

Henry IV, did a hard job in difficult circumstances & got no credit--that went to his son, Flash Harry (Henry V).

Interestingly, a case could be made on the French side for their Henry IV (of Navarre)--he of 'Paris is worth a mass' fame...

Also King Penda - 7th Century pagan King of Mercia, he had a very aggressive foreign policy.

Also Cuthred, King of Wessex who fought the Mercians probably at Burford in 752 and, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, 'put them to flight'.

Later on I like Edward the Confessor. And also Richard II because he was a cocky little bastard.
