Favourite kitchen utensil??

I absolutely love kitchen utensils of any type.

This is my utensil holder (the ones in here are the ones I use a lot - I've plenty more tucked away in the kitchen). I like all of them so can't pick a favourite.

But my metal measuring spoons and cups are nice, the anti-splatter thing is dead good for cooking steaks and burgers. Wooden spoons and spatulas of all types are always welcome in my kitchen. I like my garlic shredder and the ceramic one too.

Kitchen stuff is great, and buying new ones always makes me dispropionately happy. :)

Apart from bookshops, kitchen gadget shops are one of my favourite ways to while away a couple of hours browsing.

I agree with this. I like looking at kitchen utensils and pretending that there is room in my kitchen for more. Which there really isn't. Sadly.

My mum owns only one teeny wooden spoon which she says is better than a regular sized one. It isn't.

I love my big sharp fuck off knife. It makes me feel proper hard.

equal first - wooden spoon set and very sharp knives (chopping block).

One of my great aunts was a "cook/housekeeper" and she was always showing me little tricks in the kitchen - like peeling veg with a knife.
I always have to weigh ingredients for sponge cakes but she just did it instinctively and they were delicious. Every time!
She did teach me to make jam/jelly without a jam thermometer.

I didn't have any scales for the first 5 years of having my own place and still managed to make cake that tasted like cake. I weigh everything now but that's because my scales are pretty and I'm playing.

I have fallen out with the knife. I cut myself with it today. It is harder than me.

Does a mortar and pestle count? I actually don't have one at the minute but I miss it. I missed having a potato masher for ages when I moved but I've since bought one and not used it yet. Maybe I just like things I haven't got.

I also want a plastic slotted spoon for efficient poached egg draining. I need to add that to a shopping list because I keep forgetting.

As for things I do have, it's got to be my small knife. It's super sharp and can handle anything up to medium onion size. Very good. I have a fantastic bread knife as well.

Worst utensil? Garlic press.

I've got a beaten-up wooden spoon that I've had for decades. It's my best kitchen thing.:)

My blender! I've been making tonnes of soups and smoothies since I discovered it (still in the box!) at the back of the cupboard. I'm pretty much taking all my meals through a straw at the moment.

e2a Wait does a blender count? Is a blender technically an appliance? I don't care, I still love it.

I was bought 6 really solid tablespoons a few years ago for Christmas. They just sit there in san old jar next to the stove and get used for all sorts of stuff every day. Easily the best thing in my kitchen.

Although we did buy a really good potato masher in the summer. I just don't mash things often enough to promote it.

I love pestle and mortars - and have two! Don't use them often though.

I've had a small ceramic one for years, but my favourite is a large black granite one. Lovely and heavy, large capacity and a lovely thing to look at. A fiver in the Woolies closing down sale. :)

Bashing things with rocks must be a truly ancient method of preparing food so a nice bit of continuity with our very distant past.

We've got one like that but a bit more rustic. I like preparing food with it on the floor because I feel like a caveperson. Sadly this is true.

I've got a steel bowl I've had for longer than I even remember, that gets almost everything mixed in it from cakes to salads, it even gets used as a dog bowl from time to time. Plus it makes an awesome noise if you hit its edge, especially if there's water swilling about in it.

I love a 13 year bump. I have a new, highly dangerous julienne peeler that I'm very pleased with, and a thing for paring the woody ends of asparagus.
