Favourite Elvis Track?

I can happily totally ignore whole swathes of Elvis's work, but I do have a fondness for "That's All Right" and "Heartbreak Hotel".
Poor sucker let himself be talked into recording some real gash, though.

Why do people keep calling it 'Caught in a trap'?

Because the opening line is:"We're caught in a trap, I can't walk out, because I love you too much, baby", which is a bit daft seeing as most song titles come from the chorus, which is "We can't go on together, with suspicious minds".
Pure laziness, getting the title wrong, even by those who weren't around when Elvis recorded it, seeing as the Fine Young Cannibals charted with it in the 80s.

I knew that would get on someone's nerves. :D

Well it can hardly be classed as a favourite if you don't even know what it's called can it?

I can't really pick a favourite, there are too many I love and that are very special to me for various reasons but I would probably go with Burning Love. We played that walking down the aisle after our wedding ceremony.
(We also had Pulp and Nina Simone during the service so it was a mixed bag really).

suspicious minds, for sure

but also always on my mind,

and of course, first in line :)

"When they gave out eyes like diamonds
That would shame the stars that shine
My darlin my darlin
You were the first in line
When they gave out lips like honey
That hold a new thrill every time
My darlin my darlin
You were the first in line

There may be others
That know you longer
Who pledge their hearts to you
But theres no other
Could love you stronger
Any stronger than I do
Dont refuse me, say youll choose me
Im yours, oh please be mine
My darlin say Im your darlin
The first, and the last in line"

After much messing about, I do have a copy of every single track Elvis ever released. So it's a tough call.

I'd usually go for Suspicious Minds (which is what I presume you mean by 'Caught In A Trap') but at the moment it's Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues
Do you have a song called Fame and Fortune? Thats a really nice one. :) Everyone I ask has never heard of it though :(

One of my favourites of his has to be 'Love Letters'

Cant say I have an absolute favourite though :o

I heard of a couple who asked for Suspicious Minds for their First Dance at their Wedding Reception. Great song, but I think the lyrics may have passed them by.

I have too many favourites, but I suppose if I was pressed I'd say Mystery Train or You're a Heartbreaker. Today.

I do love Scotty Moore's solo on Too Much, though; it makes me laugh every time.

Well of course apocryphal.

I was just surprised that you seemed not to know about it.

I'm sure you'll now correct me :)

I certainly don't have a definitive answer. It was always suggested Leiber & Stoller were entirely aware what they were up to, I've never seen much of an account of what Presley thought

Well as I said, I suspect that Leiber and Stoller may have been taking the piss. At any rate, they were certainly worldly enough to know what their song implied, even if it started out unintentionally.

In those days risque or suggestible or outre things were slipped into the mainstream because punters were far more innocent than the artists/writers etc. and missed the meaning (The Shaman's Ebeneezer Goode is a good latter day example of this phenomenon, although plenty twigged soon enough).

As for whether Elvis knew what he was singing: well it's a moot point isn't it, since it's impossible to know. As I said, my own opinion is that Elvis was not so stupid that he would not have understood the inference in the song. He was pretty young at the time, and it was his first film. Perhaps he was just so caught up in his own sexual potency and power, so sure of his own position that he just went ahead and did it, took a risk, fancied playing around with stuff in public. Bit like Madge and Brit did on the telly that night.

I realise I'm teaching granny to suck eggs here, El Jefe.

Choosing one's impossible...

Suspicious Minds
His Latest Flame
An American Trilogy
Always on my Mind
I Just Can't Help Believing
Hound Dog
Good Rockin' Tonight
Can't Help Falling in Love
That's Alright Mama
Viva Las Vegas

No, hang on I've changed my mind.

If I can Dream.

What a fuckin great performance.

That is my favourite too.

Mr. QofG's bought a compilation of Elvis gospel songs last year and "Run On", "By and By", "If the Lord Wasn't Walking By my Side" are also pretty cool.

Got to admit that "Guitar Man" always gets me singing along too!

Gotta be Mystery Train or That's All Right Mama.

Rockabilly Rooster Elvis rules; Fat and Forty Vegas Elvis drools.

It's a funny thing, I don't own any of Elvis's music and wouldn't call myself a fan at all, but I do have a soft spot for tracks like Suspicious Minds*, In The Ghetto and Heartbreak Hotel.

Viva Las Vegas is also a good one - I got dragged along by my girlfriend and her sister to see a bloke called Trent Carlini (who is apparently the world's top Elvis impersonator) when we were in Vegas and really enjoyed the show.

*The Fine Young Cannibals' version is also excellent.

Love Me

My wife and i chose it as our song to have the opening dance to at our wedding.DJ assured me he'd got a copy weeks in advance so thought no more about it.Come the day,the twat played Love me Tender. We put on a brave face but i was seething at the time.Tosser.Never trust a DJ.

as an aside, compare the original studio version to the crass live performance at the end of his career when he'd turned into a mumbling, bloated pub singer. He even had a lackey following him round with a pile of fresh scarves for him to wear during the song as the audience fought tooth and nail to get hold of one.Desperately sad.

Rockabilly Elvis was cool - part of a mean tight band with scotty more and co. Fave track - Guitar Man.

Got little or no time for anything he did after that - just over blown crooning of other people's songs.

a) when he was doing rockabilly it was still other people's songs.

b) the list of fantastic singers who didn't write their own material is a fairly fantastic one.

c) Burning Love? Suspicious Minds? Way Down? Polk Salad Annie? Crooning?
