For what it's worth I think Holy Grail is funnier than Life Of Brian.

Splitter! :D

Would have to be Life of Brian from that list, but it's all contemporary films. What about Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Will Hay, Jerry Lewis, WC Fields, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Norman Wisdom, Carry On, to name but a few?

Probably 'The Odd Couple' or 'Some like It Hot' for me

I was restricted by the CH 4 shortlist (or at least I restricted myself to it). No Chaplin on the list. Personally I rate Chaplin as a genious of social commentary, not comedy so much... The Refugee, Modern Times both wonderful films.

Harold Lloyd were all shorts weren't they? There have been two compilation films though. The only Carry On on the list is Up the Kyber. Sorry, but I don't rate it. Carry On Screaming is, for me, the best CO film. Didn't rate the Odd Couple highly. SLIH is goodish.

Naked Gun is not shite!

I actually liked Clockwise though.

To do this properly you need to do pre-hustings, then a series of 'rounds', say a top 50 divided up into polls of 10, then at the end take the most popular 2 from each and put into a final 10.

I know but I can't be arsed and re Butcher's poiunt, something crap might then win!

My comment wasn't directed specifically at you Groucho, but thanks anyway!

I agree about Carry On Screaming.

My partner said something insightful about comedy the other day whe trying to explain to our daughter what made a joke funny ... she told her that we laugh most when a joke reveals something we previously thought absurd to be true.

I think Airplane wins for most jokes per minute. It doesn't let up for over an hour, and all done totally straight-faced. Brilliant.

Surely this a film very much of its time?

It certainly broke the mold being a different kind of comedy altogether.

clearly then, you know nothing.

Tis the list of a safe middle-aged bloke and no mistake.

I've forgotten what the other blatantly overlooked set of films was....

It's the trouble with lists, especially 'best ever' ones:

(1) The mafia of the mediocre

(2) The inability to please all of the people, all of the time

(3) By definition, lists will always be exclusive

(4) They reflect the prevailing attitudes and prejudices of the time

(5) No sense of irony ;)
