Life of Brian just pipped withnail and I at the post. Lots of good films missing off the poll though. What about The party with Peter Sellers?

Hmmm it's in the Ch 4 list. Nearly made it into mine. It is funny first time but doesn't stand the test of multiple viewing. IMO.

I think it does ! It must be one of my most watched films !

It's not on the Ch 4 list. Don't think I've seen it either....

I picked Duck Soup on the poll because no film has ever made me laugh as much and as often.

Makes for great therapy - you just can't be unhappy while watching it.

There are a lot of goodies missing from the list, but a truly complete list would take forever to compile.
Time sure takes its toll: I've met so many ppl who didn't even know who the Marx Bros were. :( I tell them their parents should be charged with child abuse. ;)

Holy Grail, Blues Bros, the old Thin Man Movies, everything this fucking genius ever did:

the long-forgotten Ritz Bros were terrific, Mae West was a goddess and a half, Spinal Tap, Funny Bones, WC Fields, Mel Brooks (esp Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein), Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Bringing Up Baby...etc etc etc

What is Clerks doing up there? Kevin Smith just churns out all-American off-the-shelf tripe imho.

I picked up the "Clerks" box in a video shop a couple of years ago. I think it had the original cover on it rather than the one for the more recent dvd release. Anyway, the review snippets were talking about Smith as an amazing new auteur, comparing him to Jarmusch, Hartley and so on. This was the man whose next film was "Mallrats".

That said, I actually like all of his films (with the exception of "Jersey Girl") and although crude and crass they are certainly all funny. Jay and Silent Bob in particular is stupid to the point of imbecility but it is also hilarious.

On a related note - because this is a vote in Britain, a Python film stands a chance of winning the C4 poll. That baffles me, because frankly most of their stuff has aged like a fish omelette.

On the list at start of thread Airplane, but still think funniest film ever made was Bad Taste by Peter Jackson (closely followed by Brain Damage)

I reckon they engineered it so there was only one Python, one Woody Allen and one Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker film in the top ten each. Holy Grail would've probably got in as well and I'm so torn as to which of that and Life Of Brian is better. I voted LOB but with HG in partnership with it.

Brazil is funny in parts, but it's a fucking odd filum and very sad at the end.

Ridiculous that Zoolander and Freebie and the Bean aren't on that list.
Fucking idiots.

Ladykillers is on the Ch 4 list. Nearly made it on to mine. It's moderately amusing.
dear me, you only find Ladykillers moerately amusing, but you include m-c wank like Annie Hall, and non-comedy Brazil??!! Deary deary me, that's one sadly warped sense of 'humour'.

surely it depends on your cup of tea  see i think zoolander and bean are only mildly amusing.

Take your point, but both are funnier than Brazil surely which, great movie that it is, is not a comedy per se.

i clicked Airplane. it's not by any means the best film, or possibly even the funniest, but in terms of having me in fucking stitches throughout as a kid, when i first watched it at the cinema, it wins by miles..

Harold and Maude.....young guy with death fixation has sex with eighty year old, must have last seen it on a all nighter at the ritzy in about 81, hasn't been on the tv for years that I remember. Theres a a thread about it somewhere, very funny film.

I voted Airplane but if there was an option for Home Alone 2 ( ) I would have voted for that due to the genius that is the brick throwing scene. It kills me everytime.

Brian or possibly Airplane... I forgot until I saw it again recently how unbelievably stupid and fast the gags are in Airplane.

There's a lot to be said for Blazing Saddles as well, bit of an omission, I feel - apparently my parents went to see it with my grandparents when it first came out and my grandad actually fell of his seat with laughter at one point! My sister and I used to be able to recite most of that film. :o

I think Airplane wins for most jokes per minute. It doesn't let up for over an hour, and all done totally straight-faced. Brilliant.

I am surprised MASH hasn't had more votes, Pig and I are always watching it, it's probably the only American comedy, apart from South Park, that I like.

Holy Grail IS a cracker. It was omitted simply because IMO Life of Brian was better. Groundghog day was ok but not a classic. Naked Gun was shite.

So to put simply my choice was taken from the 100 on the Ch4 site to reflect my own preferences/prejudices but stuff like Holy Grail was eliminated to make way for a wider spread.

IMO Clockwise is better than Fish Called Wanda, Forest Gump is the worst film ever made (it's not in the Ch4 list either), Carry on screaming was the best Carry On...says me.

Naked Gun is not shite!

I actually liked Clockwise though.

To do this properly you need to do pre-hustings, then a series of 'rounds', say a top 50 divided up into polls of 10, then at the end take the most popular 2 from each and put into a final 10.
