Another vote for Where the Wild Things Are - I think I've read that to little weepiper so often I'll still be able to recite it off by heart to my kids' kids. My other two favourites were also my own favourite when I was little - 'The Elephant and the Bad Baby' ('...and so the elephant stretched out his trunk and took an ice cream for himself and an ice cream for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta rumpeta rumpeta all down the road with the ice cream man running after....') and 'The Terrible Tiger' ('the tiger leered, the tiger sneered, he snorted through his nose: "What is this nonsense you propose? I'll eat your fruit, you poor buffoon, but then before the clock strikes noon, I'll swallow you just like a prune, your head and then your toes!" And gobble, gobble, down he went, for what the tiger said he meant...') Genius
