Favorite Black & White Film

some like it hot
Love that one... Marilyn's best IMO- no matter what the critics say...
Apart from the first 5 minutes, the film is flawless... And still very funny

There's a lot of non-english language B/W films which are stunning aswell:
Orphee- france
The Seventh Seal- sweden
Lake Of The Dead- norway
Hiroshima, Mon Amour- france
Ordet- denmark
early Kurosawa fims- Japan

Loads of american/british film noir aswell, unfortunately can't recall any titles...
Double Indemnity? Featuring Bogart- that was pretty good...

You know, before I ever saw Marilyn Monroe in a film, I wondered what all the fuss was about.

But now I know!

*phew*

Nosferatu
or
The Cabinet if Dr Caligari
or
Metropolis
or
Pandoras Box
or
Svankmeyers' Alice
or
Frankenstein
or
Faust

This is not even a Black & White film at all, but I want to mention The Black Narcissus (I just caught the end of it on Film4, but I have seen it a few times before).

I mention it because it just has that dreamy feel to it, like being trapped inside the psychotic nightmare of a comatose and horny nun.

I like that film a lot, has a good atmospheric feeling of repression and isolation........beautiful location too !

I think even though it is in technicolour, it represents a lost age of film.

That's a colour movie :)

It is a colour film, yes and what's more it most certainly is not in black and white.

Dr Caligari and Fantomas also had tinted frames and were not black and white either.

Anyway...now I'm back in this bloody thread I can't leave without posting...

Battleship Potempkin
Strike
October

(Although all b/w films Eisenstein personally painted the red flag red frame by frame on early versions of BP)

is The Conformist black & white? I can't remember
Colour, I'm afraid - but with the most extraordinary monochrome scene: Giulia in a black and white striped dress dancing in a black and white room with white light streaming through venetian blinds... Magnificent!

Double Indemnity is a fine movie, but Bogart wasn't in it :)

Two of Bogart's best films are The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon, probably one of them? I'll add The Big Sleep to my list, has fantastic dialogue and is my favourite film noir.
