Not only did I used to live in Thurrock, ....the exisiting community to rebel against it?
yes, I agree. Except to say that people do not automatically feel the need to rebel against an apparent influx of people with different skin colour or background (actually the demographics of Thurrock is changing, mainly as a result of Londoners of varied backgrounds moving out here, but also Polish workers who are probably transient)
The reason there is a 'rebellion' is because there is growing discontent. This is an area that includes obvious Labour teritory. The Tilbury docks lost many jobs under the Tories. People feel completely let down by Labour. Something is to blame for the problems people are facing in the struggle to pay bills, and for the breakup of community. You are right to mention Lakeside, but also the out of town supermarkets. LP and Tory clearly have no answers. However, the press and recently the BBC see problems with immigration.
Yes, this is the 'respectable' face of the BNP. The rubbish clearing, graffitti washing face of the BNP who have Jewish councillors and who say they are not racist. A far cry from the NF. The Tories in the 70s sounded more extreme on race than the BNP do today. But racism remains at the core even of their public face, and fascism at their heart.

but also
Labour are so out of touch they have no idea what worries and anxieties real people have around here, and the councillors appear distant and horribly out of touch. The BNP, for a lot of people, are the ones who at least recognise those concerns.
