Farmers Markets

Not utter shite, there are clearly two layers of farmers markets out there, some genuinely local whilst others like mine are just a commercialised rip-off with traders from any-old place.

Same here, I've just had a look at my local 'farmers market' and saw nothing out of the ordinary and prices that were...well, a little inflated. None of the stallholders actually looked as though they worked on a farm, let alone seen the countryside.

Because your butcher doesn't have his own interests in downplaying farmers markets...

Well of course he does but as he's a big cheese in the industry I also think he has the interests of the whole of the butchery trade aswell. He's a long term local trader who knows when people are being ripped off is all.

I've no problem with what people spend their money on but people are prepared to moan when supermarkets take the trade of local business then assume that these markets are somehow different when they're supporting farmers or as we have heard bigger business who have nothing to do with the communities they operate in.

then he's talking utter shite, probably because he would prefer people to buy from him rather than directly from the producer.

I can't get the the range of game or non imported produce unless I go to the farmers market or travel outside of hat I would call my local area.

How far do you call local? Have you been out and asked?

Fairly sure he has a shop not far from you.:)

My butcher friend says Farmers markets are just a con.

They're like a supermarket in disguise, somewhere where people go to pick up all the things they could easily buy locally if they ever went into their local traders and asked.

Depends on where you live though. Nowhere near here sells highland cow beef to my knowledge, and the only butcher shop I will go to in my nearest town has a crap range of pork goods.

I could get the mackerel pate in the town right enough but one thing out of a whole range isn't a con :p

Yeah well, I'm living in London, so clearly traders aren't from just round the corner, but I fail to see why I shouldn't support producers directly, especially when they offer me good quality produce at a far lower price than I would pay for decent quality anywhere else, even if they do have to travel a few miles to get here.

Sure, there are a couple of traders who charge prices I can't afford, but I ignore them and go to the people who will offer me several varieties of english apples for 1.30 a kilo and enough veg to last a family of 4 for a week for a fiver, while still selling me food that actually has flavour.

Going to a farmer's market for food is more of a treat for me, really. I do like Borough Market, even though money disappears fast in there. Last week I went there for a wander and left with empty pockets :(

I feel like doing it again tomorrow, though: have a meaty sandwich lunch followed by some patisserie and coffee

Farmers markets are only one way of getting some local produce, I always keep an eye out for signs advertising locally produced stuff when I'm out and about. Even the big chains are catching on. Tesco have been pushing organic produce recently and the others are following suit making a big thing of stocking local produce. If you don't see it make a point of asking for it.
