Tory and Labour equivilants were in coalition until recently. The centre are losing it; left alternative needed...
This would make the far right the largest parliamentary bloc. At the very least the price of them allowing another govt to be formed will be a referenndum on the EU (whether the lisbon treaty will be all the referendum covers i don't know).
Combined far-right vote around 16-17% last time
was the Lisbon treaty a big issue?
There needs to be a referendum so we can kick that out. Can't allow the right to make the running.
It ws one of the central issues from what i've read.
A triumph for culinary conservatism!
Fat Nazi cunts.
that makes some sense then. Most people would oppose Lisbon if they knew anything about it, but the political mainstream quietly endorses it. Ireland and France have seen left-led campaigns against the EU neo-liberal agenda. In the absence of that the right will make hay.
I didn't mean it was *the* central issue - immigration appeared to have that role, with anti-islam and anti-eu sentiments being subsidiary parts of that overriding issue, i.e even the eu debate was filtered through and was part of a wider debate about immigration. not the neo-liberal nature of the EU and the Lisbon Treaty. Very different from the situation in Ireland a few months back. It woulkd be very dangerous to simply write off this result (we're going on exit polls here still) as a misdirected anti0-neo-liberal/anti-eu vote. It seems to be rerflect much more than that.
The Freedom Party didn't do as well as expected, with the Alliance for the Future of Austria polling better. They seem to have taken the votes that were expected to do to the FP
What the hell is wrong with Austria?
After a spate of people being found locked into cellars into adulthood and in a country with a small population.
Euronews is reporting that the two far right parties combined will be slightly behind (two seats?) the Social Democrats.
Latest voting figures
SPÖ (Social Democrats) 29,71% 1.316.091 (2006: 35,34% 1.663.986)
ÖVP (Tories) 25,61% 1.134.837 (2006:34,33% 1.616.493
GRÜNE (Greens) 9,79% 433.810 (2006: 11,05% 520.130)
FPÖ (Far Right) 18,01% 797.993 (2006: 11,04% 519.598)
BZÖ (Far Right) 10,98% 486.397 (2006: 4,11% 193.53)
This is bad news. This follows hot on the heels of the earlier far right victory in Italy.
Did that cunt Jörg Haider win?
Yes - his breakaway party from the Freedom Party - Alliance for the Future of Austria (Bündnis Zukunft Österreich, BZÖ) standing as "BZÖ – Liste Jörg Haider" - got 11% of the vote and 21 seats (out of 183) up by 14. The Freedom Party itself also gained 14 seats to rise to 35 seats The two far right parties have 56 seats, nearly one third of the parliament, compared to 58 for the Social Democrats, 50 for the Tories and 19 for the Greens.
What is it about Austria -these days they lock up an Austrian military Veteran who hides his young wife and large familly from the Authorities whilst go back 30 years and they turned a similar story into one of Hollywoods most beloved Musicals.
people are SOOOO fickle.
Both far right loons actually hate each other and that pretty much keeps them from coalition -looks like its back to the old grand alliance.
You still can't work out how and where to use large case letters. The word "musical", for example, does not require a capital "M" as it is not a proper name.
Same thing's wrong there that has always been; conservatism, xenophobia and a willingness to blame outside influences for their own failings.
Apart from the conservatism it sounds a lot like U75.
All I can say is that you must be looking through a pretty distorted prism to say this.
He might be talking in an internet sense. Maybe he's trying to start a board war!
If you say so.
lol no I'm just having fun. It's not easy being American.
Were you Yanking our chain? Sorry.
You're right. That is one crumb of comfort in this result.
Not any more they don't.
Just wait a couple of days...
Will it be a cosmetic show of unity for the camera's and their supporters in a couple of days though?
These two really hate each others guts.
Do you understand the meaning of this word?
Separate names with a comma.
