Fanatisical Thamesmead

Hasnt changed!
Although what is happening with Thamsmead estate now?
It has changed! But maybe I have a different perspective because my family has lived here or hereabouts since the late 70s.

We live here now.

There's all sorts that's happened as a result of the Crossrail related regeneration. Much of the brutalist architecture around Tavy Bridge has gone and replaced by new builds. There's a few, approx 6, high-rise blocks of flats left in the original Thamesmead, most have been demolished.

Peabody manage the estate and do a lot on terms of grounds maintenance etc.

We now have a big Sainsbury's within walking distance for many and a short bus ride for seniors. A small co-op has opened on the Yarnton Way/Abbey Wood roundabout.

Roads etc much better. Rail transport is amazing because the train station at Abbey Wood - Lizzie line. It's made such a difference to people's lives.

Loads and loads of community stuff going on.

Wildlife has unequivocally benefited from the regeneration. Lots of effort into reed beds, jetties onto the lake etc. The outside spaces are lovely.

Housing prices have escalated especially near the station.

The older tower properties have a lot of "guardians" living there. Not all properties and people have benefited from Peabody management. The Button describes it as on or off. Some get the benefit, some don't and it's clearly.income related. There's more to say on this.

I managed to buy a Thamesmead cream tea from the Sainsbury's cafe just before they closed it down. A pity as it had beautiful views of the towers stretching down the estuary.

I went for a walk there last weekend:
