Famous indie covers of soul/sixties songs

Pavement covered Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Sinister Purpose' quite a bit live, probably an MP3 of it knocking around somewhere :)

The KLF's spinoff project Disco 2000 released a disco-pop cover version of "Uptight," by Stevie Wonder.

It was also ripped off by Oasis in "Step Out"

You mean The Breeders, yeah? :)

yeah of course, durr me. Lack of sleep caused by ear ache! Really like that album, still...

But just remembered didn't the Wedding Present do quite a lot of covers during their one single a month thingy...
Pleasant Valley Sunday
Chant of the Ever-circling Skeletal Family
Theme from shaft
etc

billy bragg's rather um, unique version of walk away renee

that's fucking ace - and I bow to no man in my love of The Four Tops' original, one of the very greatest records ever made.

has no-one mentioned the Mary Chain's version of 'My Girl' yet? that's good. vaguely sinister.
more Fall - Victoria, and Ghost In My House
Shop Assistants - Train to Kansas City (a perfect fit for them)

would The Ramones version' of Baby I Love You count?
