Can't stand David Jason now, but I clearly remember how much I laughed the first time I saw him fall through that bar. Very, very good bit of slapstick, spoilt 'only' by continual repetition and over-analyses of the moment.

edit: Am I the only one who doesn't find Father Ted hilarious? I do think it has some good jokes (some you can be really fond of like the size constancy stuff and the protest placards), I like some of the programmes, but it's just really limited.

*thinks about scampering but hangs about to see if there are few enough pitchforks to take on*

edit: :D :D I meant scarpering, but I'm leaving it like that :D

I thought thought Trigger's reaction to Delboy falling through the bar was what made the gag funny for me - the blank look around wondering where Delboy's gone and the surprise when Delboy pops up again.

I saw an interview with John Sullivan where he said that Roger Lloyd Pack was only written into the scene at the last minute when they found he was filming in the next studio and had some time to spare. I don't think it would have been as funny without him.

I know this is off topic, but one of the best fallers-over I've ever seen in a comedy programme is David Hyde Pierce who plays Niles in in Frasier. He is a genius at physical comedy

Back on topic, Del Boy was funnier at the time for reasons that have been stated: it was so unexpected and both David Jason and Roger Lloyd Pack were excellent in it.

I don,t think slapstick as a sell by date take laurel and hardy:)

The best falling over bit of all time is the AB FAB falling into the grave bit but between these two it's definitely Mrs Doyle- it's the way her foot delicately looks for a place to land.....

And also that Only Fools and Horses is just generally shit...sorry.
