Falling down

I also find films which examine social tension interesting. From the same time period as Falling Down we have American History X, Pariah and Romper Stomper - all of which I think are much better.

American History X is one of the most overrated films in the last twenty years.

American History X was a little later, late nineties.

Romper Stomper is the early Crowe film isn't it? I remember the bit when they get their arses handed to them in a battle with a big gang from the Chinese (or is it Vietnamese?) community they've been targeting. Some little bloke wearing spectacles with jam jar lenses called Magoo, flailing about with some nunchucks before getting beaten up.

The scene with the gay dudes and the military store loon with Douglas kicking off is quality.

It's not a fantastic film IMO but it's strangely unsatisfying, and almost enjoyable because of that. Some good angry-white-collar-dude violence at points..

It was the phrase "perception that many Korean store owners are greedy and over-charge" that smells of prejudice. It's the insidious way that such an idea can seem to be justified on the basis of "it's not racist cos it's true".

A lot of resentment also lies in the stocking of 40oz bottles of insanely strong brew that screwed up a lot of communities, along with the other hard drugs, seen as a way of keeping ghetto people incapable. But it is essentially racist.
100% of the customers are black Afro Americans and nearly 100% of the liquor stores, the gas stations, the nail bars and the clothes shops are owned by Vietnamese/Korean/Asian Indian folk and the profits aren't enjoyed by the black community, nor do these businesses employ people from the community.
A lot of the money goes abroad, and there is something clearly wrong there, regardless of racial issues.
