Facial skin reactions to products

Well, how long does it last, how often does it flare up, what makes it flare up? Have you not had it since 1991? Is there anything over-the-counter I can buy?

I'm going to bed to be miserable now :(

I used to put Benovate on it, in the days when Benovate was still OTC (I was convinced it was eczema cos I have asthma). Course, that made the area photosensitive as a result so it got worse :D Once I did eventually get my arse down the doctors she sorted it out really quickly.

It doesn't last long once you put the antibiotic fluid on it. Works very quickly. I don't think you can buy anything OTC that has the same effect, but I'm not sure.

What makes it flare up? Hormones and/or stress. I haven't had a proper flare up since 1991 but every so often when I'm stressed I do get a few of those blistery spots. Just knowing what it is seems to help somehow, you haven't got the stress of worrying about the rash adding to the stress that caused it in the first place ... if you see what I mean.

Hey, I didn't mean to make you miserable, far from it. It might not be that at all. But if it is, it'll save you loads of time and effort, and can get cleared up quickly.

Maybe because I have dry skin I automatically reach for the "dry skin" variety, although I'm sure I have had products labells "dry and sensitive skin"

For some things I'd go right down to the basic generics and then work from there. For soap go to an absolutely basic unscented variety. For a moisturiser use Aqueous Cream BP, or even Double Base. There's almost no chance of having a reaction to those. If you can get a set of very simple products that cause no problems it's easy then to work back out again and slowly find nicer things that are nonetheless OK. Approaching it from the other direction is hard work.

Best place to start would be asking a pharmacist what products that you currently use can be replaced by something that almost never causes a reaction.

So far the only things I've managed to add are Body Shop ginger shampoo (much nicer than Johnson's Baby Shampoo), and either the Carex or Sanex anti-bacterial handwashes. The jury is out on tea tree oil based stuff, and Body Shop used to do some marvellous bath salts that I could use safely, so naturally they stopped stocking them.

I'm not an expert on make up, but from many years doing Thesping I know that I can safely use greasepaint, and that using pancake leaves my face extremely sore the following day. How that relates to ordinary make up I haven't a clue.

I have the same problem with my scalp as well and I've been to health food shops and got paraben free shampoos but they've not stopped my scalp from itching.

Cocois, coconut oil compound, made by Celltech and available from a decent pharmacy. Rub it into the scalp when it feels dry and it both works as a moisturiser and also seems to stop the skin flaking. Makes the hair smell a little bit of coconut, but to be honest once it's been combined with something like ginger or apricot shampoo, it can be rather a pleasant scent. Smells loads better than henna at least. :)

L'Oreal and Oil of Olay seem to sit on my skin and not absorb properly. I can draw a finger over my skin and end up with a load of dried up gunk on it

I find the safest time for me to apply cream (for absorption and irritation) is just after a bath....when the skin on my face is not (quite) still wet, but is also not as dry as it would be at other times...... :hmm:

I get it - it started to go really bad last summer and only cleared up when I started using Purple Emu blemish and redness control cream that Madzone recommended on another thread. It made a huge difference and my skin's better than it's been in years :)

How do you react to aqueous cream Minnie? Once when I was moving house all the dust and stress sent my skin haywire, and it was the only thing that didn't make my (usually calm) skin all red and sore and thick
I used it as a cleanser and moisturiser and it made me look all glowy and healthy

I first got it when I was pregnant and it got REALLY bad before I went to the GP... once I got the lotion (mine's called Zineryt) it was better even within a few days and pretty much gone within 2 weeks. It's never gone forever though, it can come back every few months or so. My GP said to basically just treat it when it appears then stop using the stuff for a while til it comes back. Mine is never that bad now because I start using the stuff whenever I feel the first spots tingling (bit like a coldsore feeling). I don't think there's anything over the counter but a prescription doesn't cost that much given the bottle lasts a couple of months :)

Nah, I'm joking, I'm just miserable when it's tingling/itching like mad and when I have to go out in public :D

Oh, I have a 500g dispenser pot of Double Base somewhere in the house. Will have to try that.

Yes, but will it get rid of the blistery spots on my scalp as well or just stop them itching?

Noted

Never heard of it, but will keep an eye out.

erm, is that stuff like E45? I think I've used that with no problems. Not sure why I stopped using it though as have a very large tub at home.

Not sure what a coldsore feeling is, but they're definitely tingling. Looks like I'm going to have to find the time to go to the doc's at some stage :(

Need to really I suppose as my wrist has been scrunching for months

That itching/tingling drives you mad doesn't it? Yeah, get down the doc's specially as you've got to get your wrist sorted too (RSI?)

dunno, I don't think so. It's my left wrist. Been like it for months. When I turn it, it scrunches. Sometimes it feels like it's locked

Now you've got two things to go for. And you're probably overdue a smear test as well aren't you

hm, maybe I can also ask if she'll send me to a dermatologist to get the skin tag on my scalp burned off :D

Smear test? um, don't think so. They normally send out letters when you're due one I think

I knew there'd be something else :D There ya go - three things.

Yeah, I can. Looks quite interesting.

It just freezes on my screen. Can you see how much the "Redness and Blemish" 0.5g pot is?

Also if it lists shops that sell it, otherwise I'll have to wait 'til I get home and see if I can access the website from there.

Thank you kindly :)

Yes, I've already found that site and it costs $33 with delivery, but delivery can take ages over a week, so I thought I'd see if I could find it somewhere in the UK instead

Jeez! Go to your GP, get a script for some zinc-erythromycin lotion, pick it up from a pharmacy for 6 quid. Start looking better in 3 days!
