Why the hell didn't they (BBC TV) go to Chasetown?
well, they didn't, but I did, and had one of my favourite days ever, they were so fucking friendly, everyone. It was great. We (Cardiff) were outplayed in the first half, sneaked an equaliser just before the break and just about shaded it in the end.
There was a lot of me that wouldn't have minded at all if we had lost - the Chasetown people are what football is all about - 20 of them up trees, a hundred peering over the fences into the ground, the half time in the clubhouse (I was in the posh bit) with 6 daughters of the players all lined up wearing full kits stuffing their faces with the cakes nearly busting the table there were so many, they really really loved it, all of them, and it was a pleasure to be there.
The part of the ground I was in had a lot of former players (Collymore, Regis, Brooking) and the whole R5 crew in there, the Cardiff directors and hard-nosed club staff, honestly everyone knew that this, truly, is why we all love football. It was magic. I've been going 32 years (fuck!) and this reminded me that it is such a brilliant, beautiful game when you strip out all the cynicism and bullshit.
If anyone on here is from or knows anyone from Chasetown, say thanks from me, it was a privelige to be there. Cheeky fuckers and all, they had 4 blow-up sheep and took the piss non-stop.
