F1 2005 Season Thread

So Button pays £20m and gets out of his contract...good one.

BAR/Honda have a very handy team now with 2 pretty balanced drivers. Sato's had his chance and crashed it.

Williams had better hope Cosworth prdouce a stonkihn engine, otherwise they could be in trouble. Webber's a good driver, but needs to learn some race craft, and with Nick off to BMW, there's a decent seat going. I'm hoping they give Davidson the chance he deserves, but I imagine they'll give Rosberg another test with the view to it being either him or Pizzonia for 2006.

Frank would have been crazy not to take the money and run.... its obvious williams wont be competitative and they have lost a major sponsor....its win win for both teams.... honda have their dream team and williams get to save some money for future investments

The teams are shaping nicely up for 2006 now:

Mclaren: Raikonen & Montoya (confirmed)
Renault: Alonso & Fisicella (most likely)
Ferrari: Schmacher & Massa (confirmed)
BAR: Button & Barrichello (confirmed)
Toyota: Ralf S & Trulli
BMW: Heidfeld & who knows (Villenueve staying or Other)
Red Bull: Coulthard & Klien
Red Bull 2 (sic): Luizzi & Speed

The only teams up in the air driver-wise for next year are Williams, who presumably have Webber and then one out of Pizzonia, Davison & Rosberg - the latter seeming the most likely - and Jordan, sorry 'Midland' - I reckon might have Davison and then some hired vegetable.

My best guesses would be:

Mclaren: Raikonen & Montoya
Renault: Alonso & Fisichella
Ferrari: Schmacher & Massa
BAR: Button & Barrichello
Toyota: Schumacher & Trulli
BMW: Heidfeld & JV/Rosberg
Red Bull: Coulthard & Klien
Red Bull Minardi: Luizzi & Speed
Jordan: Monteiro & Davidson
Williams: Webber + Pizzonia/Rosberg

Rosberg is german and has links with BMW so if they can buy JV out of his contract he may partner Nick. Williams will probably go for Pizzonia for his experience and testing/development availability.

Well, I missed the race due to the gravital forces in The George, London Bridge so just read through the details on the BBC website. Sounds like a okay race and nice to see a new world champion.

I am a Mclaren fan, having lived next door to their offices in Woking for a while and I find this seasons results a bit strange. If form continues it seems that Mclaren should snatch the constructors from Renault.

Whilst not taking anything away from Fenando, Kimi has really lost the drivers title due to reliability issues where and Renault have been pretty constant. It is fair that the title goes to Alonso but it feels a bit odd..........

Renault + Good reliability = Drivers Title
Mclaren + Poor reliability = Constructors Title (perhaps)

I think Renault have benefitted from a poor BAR and Ferrari showing too. The car is nowhere near the McLaren now, just like last season when they started so strongly and finish with a whimper.

Alonso deserves to be WDC - he way he held off Schumacher in San Marino, his pace early season and his wins have been deserved. Kimi has shown what a great driver he is in recent races but the reliability issue has cost him.

JPM has been much better after a shaky start and woudl be a lot closer were it not for Monteiro and Pizzonia deciding to rearrange his car under blue flags.

Performance of the weekend though goes tro Klien for his amazing qualifying run on heavier fuel than the Renaults. Red Bull were right to leave him in the seat and I hope he gets to partner DC next season.

Nice to see Jenson blaming some mysterious wind for his pace as well

Well I wondered whether to bother to get up at 5.30 & watch the Japanese GP.

I'm glad I did - some great overtaking moves, especially by Alonso, and then Hakkinen , who started 17th takes the race long leader Fisichella on the last lap for a victory that means the Manufacturers title goes right down to the last Grand Prix of the season.

You mean Raikkonen :D

Great GP with soem stunning overtaking - esp Alonso at 130R and Kimi on race worn tyres on Fisi on the outside of turn 1. Once again Button failed to live up to the hype...although no mysterious gusts of wind were to blame

I still think McLaren will sneak the constructors title, providing JPM doesn't crash again.

The best GP of the year and one of the best I've ever watched in years. Kimi's move for me was akin to Mansell taking Senna round the outside in Mexico when he was driving for Ferrari.

Just so bizarre to watch the cars move at that speed tho - no actual flowing movement just the jerky 'zip/zip' shapes they make.

Awesome stuff...

Great race, Great Winner, even better Champion

The consensus here seems to be that reliability fucked Kimi, well yeah but FisiK managed to get his renualt to falls bits nicely, whereas Alsono finished, and in the points, in all bar one race so far
If you know yer rides a bit frail it makes sense not to thrash it
Alsono is a worthy champion because he has more than one way of handling his car, Kimi really is a pedal to the metal type, not wise with such a long season and a motor, which tho fast did seem rather "delicate" early in the season.
This race was so utterly amazing because with the drivers title sorted they were racing with no other thought than to win, the Shue, Alonso, Kimi train was stonking, that Alsonso pass- fuck me, made the hairs on me nexk stand up, this man has HUGE cojones
Great race, almost compensates for the farce that was the US Grand Bollocks

Constructors
2 points in it, should be McClarens, but I dont fancy both their cars to stay on the track - JP drives a bit like I used to play Scalextric, always going stright ahead fuck the corners style - so Renault to win that too

There's only been one race this season where both McLarens had no problems and finished.

Was a great race, very glad I stayed up all night for it.

The stage is set for an amazing final race................I am a bit gutted it is on at 06:00 as I have no TV so normally rely on 'popping round to see a mate' about an hour before the race starts! Guess I could watch the repeat at 14:00 but I hate doing that :(

I am a McLaren man myself and although it seems they are on the back foot they have (Kimi particularly) have been qualifying well with heavy fuel. I agree that Montoya is probably the key to the title, if he can stay on the track then McLaren may well take it from them.

1. F Alonso (Renault) - 1:34.080
2. G Fisichella (Renault) - 1:34.401
3. K Raikkonen (McLaren) - 1:34.488
4. J Button (BAR) - 1:34.801
5. JP Montoya (McLaren) - 1:35.188
6. M Schumacher (Ferrari) - 1:35.301
7. D Coulthard (Red Bull) - 1:35.428
8. R Barrichello (Ferrari) - 1:35.610
9. R Schumacher (Toyota) - 1:35.723
10. M Webber (Williams) - 1:35.739
11. F Massa (Sauber) - 1:35.898
12. J Trulli (Toyota) - 1:36.044
13. A Pizzonia (Willliams) - 1:36.445
14. C Klien (Red Bull) - 1:36.472
15. N Karthikeyan (Jordan) - 1:36.707
16. J Villeneuve (Sauber) - 1:36.788
17. T Sato (BAR) - 1:37.083
18. C Albers (Minardi) - 1:39.105
19. T Monteiro (Jordan) - 1:39.233
20. R Doornbos (Minardi) - 1:39.460

Another interesting point is that the result may be a tie for the title if McLaren were to win by two points.

Source - F1 Rules and Regs

In the case of a dead heat for a championship place then the driver or team with the higher number of superior race results will be awarded the place. For example, if McLaren and Jordan finish the season top of the table on equal points, then the team with the most race wins will be declared champion.

Last post in the build up to the race............

It is going to be a nervous race for certain but the start will be a real nail biting one! All the Renaults and McLarens in the top 5 places on the grid, they will be fighting for the first corner but will be desperate not to have any contact at all.

Jenson has been qualifying well all season but has not really been threatening these teams during the race. He may well stay in the top four for the first part of the race but should not affect them much.

As I said before it will be a GREAT race with all four drivers needing to push for positions but focus on staying on the track and not having any shunts. Any driver from another team that was to take one of the four off may be deciding the championship with one mistake!!!

Excited...................Me?

:D

Once again...what happened to the BAR's? Obviously one was driven by a liability, but Jenson had no pace whatsoever.

Renault deserved the constructers crown - the car wasn't consistnetly the quickest but it held together! And soemone should throw the book at the Chinese organisers for not locking the drain cover - if JPM had hit it int he middle he might not even be here.

As it is it destroyed any chance McLaren had - Silverstone may be old and a bit rough round the edges, but at least the track doesn't fall apart

IMO both teams were deserving of the title...........

The race pretty much summed up McLaren's season! Was gutted that JPM went off but regardless his extra stop coupled with two sessions behind the safety car killed any fuel advantage that they had. Fisichella should have been pulled in a lot earlier for his pentalty which also cost valuable seconds!

Gutted that the year is over :(

I get the feeling next season is going to be just as good - i'm sad to see Minardi go, but there's a chance a few new , excting drivers will get a chance. I hope Doornbos keeps his seat because he's done really well, but I don't think he will.

We've got the V8 engines, which are a bit of an unknown, more aero rules and the possiblity of yet more rule changes regarding qualification (why...seems to work to me) and engine rules (again 10 places might seem harch, but the manufacturers know the rules and it didn't stop Kimi!).

Oh and the prospect of Button finishign 5th in every race and blaming phantom wind for his pace  :D

Wonder if she's as good as Danica Patrick? Good luck to her, she's got talent, but then so do lots of drivers and they never make F1.

IHB said:
Do you think she might scrape the wing while parking it?
I'm envisioning something like this :D
