You are right do do your research. I tried to do this as much as possible on that Toshiba 320 Gb drive they had on offer.
Usually I'd look at forums, customer reviews/ratings (eBuyer/Dabs/Amazon) but I couldn't see anything on any site really rating this drive - least of all give any information as to whether it was PC/Mac compatible and what the warranty was. Incidentally - I went to the technical desk at PC World yesterday with the same drive to ask a very basic question:
Me: Excuse me, what is the warranty on this Hard Drive?
PCW. Er... (starts looking at the back of the box)
Me: I've read the box, it doesn't say on the outside
PCW: Well it's probably a year
Me: Probably or definately
PCW: er...(calls to his mate) is the warranty a year on this thing a year?
His mate: er..yeah I think so
PCW: yeah its a year
Me: Can we check inside the box and see
PCW: no we can't open the box
Me: Why?
PCW: Because we can't sell it if the box has been opened
