Explain the Banana Splits to me

That's the one!

Is it the same tune?

Well, the chorus of both 'Buffalo Soldier' and The Banana Splits theme goes '....Tra La La, La La La La, La La La, La La La La La...'

:D

(I was tiny when BS was on).

Well, I only would've seen it as a repeat in the mid seventies.

It's unlikely I'd have seen it when it was first broadcast. -I'm old, but I'm not that fucking old!

They were shite. I remember one being shown years ago on the Big Breakfast and the 'episode' just consisted of a chessy 70s love song, footage of a drippy 70s couple walking along a beach and a few shots of the Banana Splits going about in their buggy over some sand dunes.

After it, Chris Evans just went 'What was that?! That was just utterly rubbish, wasn't it?' and he and the entire crew were clearly bemused.

What was Danger Island all about? And were they supposed to be dogs or something?
No, they weren't all dogs.

Wasn't Shazam the name of the genie who appeared when the two halves were put together?

I think it was 2 halves of a coin mounted on 2 rings that two kids wore - when they put them together they'd say Shazam! and the genie would appear in a lightening flash. Or something.

And I always thought it was Uh Oh Chongo (I know, it really matters)

Bought the compilation video a while back. You definitely shouldn't revisit your youth. On a slight tangent, there were several cartoons all with dark skinned baddies and light skinned heroes. Bet you couldn't do that today.

It was just a joke. Nothing meant by it at all. I thought you were the only mod around that time. I may have been wrong. And FM normally seems to do poliitcs stuff and he usually says when he's moving stuff.

alterntive lyrics

as far as I can remember in my school the words were
one banana two banana three banana four,
three skinheads knocking at the door
one with a hammer one with a stick one with a hand grenade hanging from his -
tra laa laa tra la la etc.
We told each other that this was the words from the dickies version but I don't think this is so on the subjuect of dodgy cartoons may i nominate thundercats as the dodgyiest of all, any ever see the first episode? it set up the background and explained how the 'cats were involved in a war off extermination against the 'lesser spieces' mutants etc. and when it appeared were about to lose their home planet destroyed it rather than let the undermensch take over killing everyone else bar themselves.

Naah
the perils of penelope pitstop has to rank high in the most dodgiest stakes IMO

every episode a villain so camp that he made kenneth wiliams look butch kidnaps and ties up our herione in elaborate forms bondage and constructs elaborate torture mechanisms for her demise, the likes of which would have left pinochet impressed.

heeeyulp, heeeylp she screams, at which point she is rescued by a gang of lovable mafi villains

I mean

what was that all about??!!

wacky races also spawned another spin off series "Catch That Pidgeon" which was even more perplexing,if Darstardly and Mutley were that intent on stopping said pidgeon, instead of trying to capture him in a series of unareodynamic flying machines they should have just sucked him into the turbines of a moderate sized jet.

I thought it was Uh oh, Jungo.

Does anyone know the real answer. Cos it is important.

"Uh-oh, Chongo."

I recorded it off Cartoon Network and spliced the Danger Island episodes together to make one long movie.

Most of you are off by miles.
The Banana Splits Adventure Hour premired in 1968 and ran until 1970. The four of them were Feegle (the dog,) Bingo (the ape,) Drooper (the lion,) and Snorky (the elephant.) This American show has become the example of late 1960's Saturday morning live action programming. The quartet was a band that spent most of their time at their home, where a long-haired head was mounted to a wall. If one of them got hurt, the head would say "That's an ooch!"
The show was divided into two parts. The other half was a dramatic live action show called Danger Island. This starred actor Jan-Michael Vincent and was directed by Richard Donner. It consisted of them being on an island where there were numerous traps and pratfalls. Whenever serious trouble happened. One of them would shout "Uh-oh, Chongo!" to which Chongo (another one of them) would save the day.

Later on, this format was tossed in favor of an animated cartoon called The Adventures of Gulliver. It was based on Gulliver's travels.

The only cartoons I can remember on the Banana Splits were the Arabian Knights and the Three Muskateers. I often tried the 'size of a lion' routine but it never worked. Banana Splits was one of my favourite shows as a kid because it was so manic.

It was definitley 'Uh-oh Chongo' too. Was that phrase used in association with Ali Bongo (zany 70s kids' tv magician) or did I combine the two in my addled memory?
